I've built the 964 I like, not what a future, possible buyer wants. This car is my hobby and my hobby has to be fun. Then it is buit with parts, and with a quality that would work in a future even if the market is smaller for my car compared to a stock car.

Rennlist/Pelican owners are probably smaller % of most 911 owners here vs there. There have always been two distinct types. However the air cooled 911 buyer is changing with the marlket, it would appear the rarity of these cars is creating a collectors market vs enthusiasts market and originality is key. Most buyers always wanted clean unmodified cars. Some just like things stock and others wanted original so they can make their own modifications vs what someone else thought was best. Otherwise it was converted for hard core track duty and that usually brought the value down. You may sell for more than clean stock market value but far less than what was invested.

In the past 10 years or so I must have helped well over 50 people find 964 and 965's. In almost every case the buyer expected original paint. Some times it didn't matter if it was in good condition or not so long as it was original. Basic mods were not as much an issue but would not add value to the car. Buyers are nervous a respray may have been done to cover up a bigger issue. We do not have the controls here that you do that document what a car has been through. Everything depends on if a claim was made to the insurance carrier. So it is buyer beware.

Engine mods can work against you. Unless the engine builder is known by the buyer who is to say it was done correctly? There are thousands of dealerships, independent Porsche specialists and Joe "I service every make and model" mechanics along with your shade tree owner rebuilding these engines.

The value of these cars here is set based on originality and from there it can go up or down depending on what was done and how much demand there is for the specific model. I am not saying a modified car will not fetch a premium however it may take considerably longer to find the right buyer for the particular modifications.

Many tks for all the thoughts and views since I started this thread .
The rebuild starts next week in earnest and eta is 6-8 weeks.
I've decided standard is for me and to concentrate more on getting the cosmetics right and spending eventually on suspension in due course.
Maybe before the 964 is ready ill attend a meet in my 996 if you'll have me !

Hi Frank I think George is trying to persuade me to go upgrades but I'm thinking standard but interested to hear what he thinks about fitting cup cams. George on hols for a while so I still think the car is 8 weeks from being done. Steering rack being fitted soon too
