Default 964 windshield

Hi,

I need to remove my windshield when I repaint the car. Can I do so while saving both the glass and the gasket? Reading the DYI is sounds like that is not possible, but I still wanted to ask here....

Regards,

Johan

Replace the gasket with an actual Porsche gasket (not aftermarket).

The screen should be glued in so you'll likely need to replace the gasket anyway.

You should be able to re-use the glass.

You can pop the screen out quite easily without causing damage.
If you have stone chips in the screen then there is a possibility it can crack.

Talking of windscreens.

Where's Fuchs?

I haven't seen a post by him for ages, did he make it back from Spa?

Definitely agree you should replace the gasket. If you cannot find an OEM replacement (preferred choice), there are companies that can make to-order custom rubber gaskets for your specific vehicle; maybe more costly but still an available option to consider.

I removed all the glass in my 1991 coupe prior to repaint. All of the glass was glued to the rubber and all of the rubber seals were glued to the metal channels. I used a sheetrock knife and cut all the rubber from around the glass and with what rubber was left I scribed between the glass and rubber. All the glass came out leaving lots of glued rubber still in the channels. I had to scrape with a small wood chisel trying not reveal bare metal which is hard to do. I repainted in the channel using a brush and any good enamel paint just not where it would show later. You must buy original Porsche rubber seals, trust me on that because I went through this. From what I understand all this glueing came with the advent of airbag fitment.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Use only a Porsche seal.

Thanks guys,

Excellent advice. It seems like my screen was replaced recently, so I will try first to make sure it really is glued in. I pushed a little on the gasket in one corner and it was not glued to the outer part of the cowl. Maybe it is glued to the inner flange?

It just feels wrong to cut into the perfect gasked I have, but I will do it if I have to. All this for a tiny rust bubble!

Regards,

Johan

It wasnt glued in! I removed it in 10 minutes flat! It had previously been glued in, but I guess last time they mounted it like on the older cars. So I saved myself some money that I will use to pay someone to install it properly.

Thanks for your help!

Johan

Amen!!!!!!! Have a PRO do it. Don't forget about the radio aerial wire in the corner too! Another reason to turn over to a pro! I'm actually sticking with my 24 year old, in imperfect condition, rather than become neurotic and replace because it isn't perfect. I know its not the same situation as yours (repaint), but get a pro!
