Default 964 Windshield Replacement Job

Wow, I just had my windscreen replaced on the old 964. We caught a rock on a PCA drive and dine excursion. We carry American Collector ins. On the car and they picked up the cost. In SC that is required on all car ins. Policies. I felt kind of bad. The OE glass with antenna with gasket was $1608!! Safelight Auto Glass had to send their top 2 guys to do it. It is a tough job if you have the antenna in the glass. They were here 2 1/2 hrs. You have to take the dash board up to get the plug to the radio. They did a beautiful job and touched up a couple of slightly rusted spots under the rubber gasket. I will definitely be staying way back from behind any sort of trucks in the future. I think part of the reason it was so tough was that it was the original glass. I know one thing, I'm glad I didn't attempt it on my own. I had considered it. The struggle with the tiny wire for the antenna was a killer and required a minimum of 4 hands if not 6. If you need this done, make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing. I called 2 of the top high dollar body shops in the area as well as the P-Car dealer for recommendations. The head guy told me the small back side windows on a 964 are so tough, they won't even do them!

I changed the windshield in my '89 964 alone. In my garage. With 2 suction cups and some rope. 1 hour tops to fit it.
Rear side windows? 20 minutes, alone.

A *lot* of folklore here.

Did you have the antenna to deal with? They said they would have been done in 45 minutes if it wasn't for that?

Dead right. Not a big deal in anyway.

Yup, antenna wire included.
To be fair, I had the dashboard off, but that was another 30 minute job, for another reason altogether.

Just need to unscrew the top vent and pop out the clock

Unless it's different on lhd cars and the aerial is still in the bottom right corner then I can see the dash top may need to be removed

That's only if you got a Monday morning built car and some screw up put the steering wheel on the right hand side! I watched part of the procedure. It was tough getting that brand new rubber seal/gasket and window in. Right hand drive, reusing old seal or no antenna in glass would all make the job easier. I'm very glad to have had it done and paid for by someone else!

Those were the first pieces of glass I changed out. With my wife's help, I changed out both in about 30 minutes.
I've now changed out every piece on my car. No big deal.

I love seeing someone exude maximum wit on a 9-year-old post.

Since Metal Guru is no longer here to respond (RIP Metal Guru), I'll just say that's an interesting reply you had to a 14 yr old post today...

I see why you would say that. There was another post before mine, in both cases. It seemed to be a bot with some amoutn of AI promoting windshield repairs..which was really odd. With that user banned and only my posts remaining, it makes it seem like I was the one to reply to the old thread.

Saw those earlier, wondered where they went.

I really don’t think there is anything special about putting in a 964 windshield. I removed mine by cutting the 30 year old seal just not where the antenna wire was. Same as the rear. I installed the rear by myself with a rope in the seal. I choose not to glue the rear in. I decided for safety reasons to have the the front glue in. a couple of guys from a local shop came over to my house . Had it in in about 30 minutes $80. I first saw seal like Porsche 964 glass on my Dad’s 3/4 1963 Chevy 4x4 while replacing the windshield without him knowing at 16. Slow and careful is the trick
