Belt replacemet question
Hi all,
Is it possible to replace my alternator belt and fan belt without the 'porsche special tool' that keeps the alternator shaft stationary, thus allowing the loosening of the fan nut?
Can I simply stretch the belts on without breaking anything? Or, is there a substitute for the special tool?
I don't have/ need the AC belt, btw.
Thanks!

Great, thanks guys. With the stubby triple square bit, is the replacement of the alternator belt and fan belt an easy diy job?

Yup, the triple square bit + a 24mm wrench should be all you need. Hopefully the nut isn't on there stupid tight and hopefully the alternator shaft hole isn't compromised. On reassembly, I put a bit of blue locktite on the 24mm nut.

Ok, I have my new belts on. Only trouble is after idling for a few minutes, I got some smoke from one of the belts. So, do I need to add shims?
My apologies for the terribly basic questions, but I've never done this repair before.
Thanks!

Head over to napa or go online and buy a kriket tool. Belt replacement, how many shims, is all about belt tension, so you have to be able to measure the belt tension. It'll take the worry out of it after you are done. I keep mine in the car along with an extra belt and the tools to do the job.
Also if you have the factory shop manuals, the Bentley book "technical data without the guesswork", or Adrians book, you'll find the belt tension specs. I don't have them in front of me today.

Thanks Gougary! That's what I'll do in a few minutes.
Looking forward to getting my car on the road. I have Adriana book, so I'll check the specs.
Last question: on my 1990 c2, the alt belt and fan belt are the same size, correct?
Thanks again!

Then are are differences if it is tiptronic. Best to see if markings are still on the old belts. My stock C2 tip and stock C4 are different.

Well, I don't have a/c and I took out the radio. What do you guys think of a single belt conversion?
Can any who have done it give an opinion?
Thinking about doing this one to simplify since my alternator load is low. Am I thinking wrong?
