Thanks for that info. Who made the CR-1 was it a Porsche radio or blaupunkt? Thanks again.

1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS America auctioned on Monday, September 8, 2014:
Sold for £64,400 ($103,000+)
http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1069395

I like the marketing! Plus Victory Motorcars once sold it!!!!

“The same engineers who developed the Carrera Cup race cars are responsible for the brilliant RS America, their goal: the incomparable feel of a race car through reduced weight, modified steering, and firmer, sportier suspension..."

Auction text:
Type 964. 247 bhp, 3,600 cc SOHC air-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection, five-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with lower control arms, MacPherson struts with combined coil springs and dampers, and an anti-roll bar, independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, combined coil springs and dampers, and an anti-roll bar, and four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes. Wheelbase: 2,270 mm

The U.S. version of the Carrera RS
One of only 701 RSAs built in 1993
Showing 49,273 original miles and well documented
Original and matching-numbers drivetrain
A powerful and thrilling limited-edition Porsche

“The same engineers who developed the Carrera Cup race cars are responsible for the brilliant RS America, their goal: the incomparable feel of a race car through reduced weight, modified steering, and firmer, sportier suspension. To save weight, they eliminated the air-conditioning system, power steering pump, and sunroof and replaced the rear seats with a storage compartment. The retractable rear spoiler, motor, and mechanism were replaced with a lightweight fixed tail spoiler”. Thus reads the Porsche factory brochure for the 911 RS America Coupé, a model specifically created for the U.S. market in place of the European-only 964 Carrera RS.

The RS America used the body shell and glass from the standard “P” program 964 Carrera 2 and retained that model’s engine, manual transmission, brakes, and safety features. The RSA had specially upholstered front seats, which were covered in a black corduroy fabric, and as noted in the factory’s marketing materials, the 964’s rear jump seats were removed to help reduce weight. The model retained its electric window lifts, but the regular door trim panels were replaced with simple, lightweight cards similar to those used on the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7. When all was said and done, the RS America weighed a mere 1,340 kilograms. Only 701 examples were built for the U.S. market in 1993.

The car is fitted with a type M64/01 3.6-litre engine which produces 247 brake horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 310 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. Its power is delivered through the very tractable G50 five-speed manual transmission, and its standard wheels were 17x7J with 205/50ZR17 tyres in the front and 17x8J with 255/40ZR17 tyres in the rear. Large power-assisted ventilated disc brakes were more than up to the task of slowing the car from speed. Contemporary road tests showed this package was capable of quite brilliant performance, as it could reach 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 162 mph.

In October 1992, this fine RS America left the Porsche factory finished in Guards Red with a black cloth and leatherette interior, which was highlighted by red seat belts. Its original owner specified the retention of an automatically controlled air-conditioning system (Option M573), the 40 per cent limited-slip differential (M220), and Michelin tyres. Included with the sale of the car are a factory documentation letter and the car’s original registration papers, which were issued by the state of Texas on 26 February 1993 to a Ralph DuBose, of Houston; during the time of registration, the odometer read 36 miles. The car was eventually sold to Victory Motorcars, of Houston, from whom the current consignor acquired it on 1 April 2013, with the odometer reading 49,500 miles. The car was then shipped to Europe from the Port of Houston. Today, with only one registered owner and having added fewer than 250 additional miles, this car appears in excellent condition inside and out. The underside of the body retains its factory application of Cosmoline, and inside, the electrically adjustable seats show little wear. The car will be supplied with its correct collapsible spare tyre, jack, and tool kit.

The Porsche enthusiast seeking a well-kept, low-mileage example of a rare and desirable high-performance Porsche Carrera could scarcely do better than this example.

WOW!

The RM Auction in London is on U-toob. I fast forwarded to the RSA to get a sense of the bidding. It's actually a pretty interesting watch...

The forum software won't display a shortened YouTube clip [....yt]KT__ewQcctg?t=1h48m52s[..../yt], so fast forward to 1:49

I don't see why it being a 94 makes it worth more. AFAIK the 94's were all M718 coded to change the vin from a 1993 to 1994 MY car. So it is actually a 93 sold as a 94. Still the same car. Still not worth what people are asking but still a great car.

You don't even get a tool kit for $100k

So the tool kit was lifted??

When I shipped my 74 RS clone over from Rotterdam back in the 80's. I made the mistake of leaving the air compressor, bulb kit and tool kit in the car the only thing that arrived was a set of aftermarket triangles.

Lesson learned

There is another RS America Thread on here from a few weeks ago. I posted on that one, but I think the thread was dead. I will cut/paste my comments here:

--------------------

I am an original owner of a 1993 RS America.

Basically I originally bought the car because I was LESS expensive then a C2, and it was a back to basics sports car with out over 100 options (RSA could only choose color, seatbelt color, LSD, Air, Radio, Sunroof). I liked that I would have more room in the car for a helmet - without the sunroof. Overall - I just liked it better - it was 10K less - seemed too good to be true.

The car is amazing. The BIGGEST things that set it apart from a C2 in my mind are - engine noise (does not have the C2s sound insulation between you and the engine), lack of power steering. The feel of the steering is just awesome. There are a ton of other little things……..

So it is all about Supply and Demand. There were only 701 built - less exist now - especially nice ones. There are always the roomers about the cars crinkled finish under the hood, rolled wheel arches, etc (especially in the first of three build groups - which mine is). That ads interest in the car.

Is it worth 3-4 times as much? No way. Are there more people then 700 that want one - you bet. So the price reflects that.

I agree with earlier threads that the bubble will burst, and the outrageous prices that we have seen will fall again.

I am glad I still have one - and have no plans to sell. I LOVE the car - and that would be true even if it was worth 3X less than a C2!

FLAGG
