How long to you plan to keep your 964?
#22
I have no plans to sell my car but if I can find something else that intrigues me I could see myself selling the 964. I've contemplated a 996tt last Spring but a good friend who owns an '03 996tt since new told me it was not a smart move and to keep the 964. He's put 5k miles on the car in 11 years. I've put 11k miles on the 964 in 4 years....that is pretty telling.
In reality my 964 is a weekend ride that lives in my garage on Long Island. Long Island is flat and congested and really is an all around lousy place to live and be a car guy. I bought my car cheap 4 years ago and have cared for it as any enthusiast would. It has never been to a shop and I've done all the work myself. I think that if/when I hit the point where maintenance becomes tiresome, I would probably trade up to a newer car...whatever that is.
I also am cheap by nature and cannot justify spending big money on a wicked fast modern car that I will never use to its fullest (and will also depreciate). I test drove a Cayman recently and it left me cold....it felt disconnected and too smooth. The 964 gives me a driving sensation that my 2 other cars do not. The vibration of the motor and smell of warm motor oil and the quickness of the short wheelbase make me feel like a race car driver even when I am putting around the East End of Long Island.
Lastly I get a ton of compliments from people when they see my car. People of all ages and walks-of-life all tell me "That's a cool car!" I drove the 964 into NYC this past Summer and a passenger in a taxi next to me yelled out "What year is your car? It is awesome!". I also think about the old saying "When you drive an old Porsche, people think you are an enthusiast. When you drive a new Porsche, people think you are a douchebag." I live in NYC and the Hamptons so I can say in this neck of the woods there might be some truth to that.
Maybe I'll try a 997 in a few years when they come down in price a little more....

Speaking for myself, I don't understand the endless appeal of the 964. Yes, it's something to own a Porsche, but I wouldn't consider it the end-all be-all dream car for me. It's just a stepping stone in interests, and while it's a generally great performing car, it's outdated in technology and design by a long shot.
The 964 isn't the only car to own, but it's one of the greatest 'occasional use' cars to own, for me, for certain.

I'm keeping mine till I can't climb in it, then it's passed onto my sons (6&7). Just in the process of full engine rebuild, so a long time yet! Although as the years pass and values appreciate its a bit scary having it parked on the road. Time to find a house with a garage I think.

No plans to sell. Made the mistake of selling way too many 964s over the years. Decided to turn my current car into my own little "hotrod". Yes the car is 24 years old. Yes it drips a little oil. Yes it has older technology and will get smoked off the line by the family Honda. But this car just feels right. I think it complements my GT3 perfectly.

Might sell in a few years for a Ferrari 308 or to purchase a house, but those are the only two circumstances I'd willingly part with it. Hopefully I can work hard for the above and keep the 964.

It is something to own a Porsche. The 964 is a fantastic car. You might find it a bit more enjoyable if a proper tire and ride height were apart of yours. Speaking for myself, I've had many slammed("stanced" for the hipsters)VW's and Audi's and unfortunately I did the same thing with my 964 when I got it......then I raised it up, got a proper alignment done and I couldn't be happier. It's by far one of the most engaging, fun to drive cars I've ever had the pleasure of driving, best part is I own it. No plans to ever sell it but I don't want to be buried it in either. I'll pass it along to a family member, but that'll be a long time!!
