Replacing front and rear shocks

You need a special tool to hold the inner spindle still while undoing the top nut. I had to refurb two RUF Bilstein front struts ( rebranded HD) on my 964 because some muppet had tried to hold the body of the shock instead, probably with vice grips and had scratched it badly. The body goes through the seal when in use so would have eventually ruined the seals. I understand it can be done with an impact wrench. I don't have one, hence the need for the special tool.

Bilstein HDs for me, too. The rear bottom bolts were VERY tough to get off (I think they had been red Loctited), but otherwise a straightforward DIY. I did not need a spring compressor, and I didn't replace the shock mounts. You will need an alignment afterwards.
