Default Replacing front and rear shocks

Hi all,

I just got a new to me 92 Carrara 2 and I want to replace all 4 shocks. I believe the front are struts? Any advice on what type to use how to replace? I'm planning on keeping the stock ride height. It's just a weekend driver, not a track car......

Depends on how much you want to spend

Do it once, do it right. I put these on mine: http://www.kw-store.com/products/kw-...it-v3-193.html

Brilliant - best ride ever.

I did Bilstein HD as well. They are best bang for the buck. And one of the only good inexpensive options for the pre-91 cars.

kW are also good, but way more expensive.

With the right tools, everything is easy....you'll need spring compressors, a few wrenches and impact sockets and a torque wrench. That's if...nothing goes wrong. If nothing has been taken apart in 25 years, go in expecting the worst. Take your time. Soak all the bolts with pb blaster for a few days or a week ahead of time. And all good.

If the rear shocks have never been removed, prepare a really big cheater bar or a very strong impact wrench for the trailing arm attachment point.

DIY? I recently put Bilstein HD in my Turbo 3.6. I did the front struts/shocks myself, but let a mechanic install the rears. The fronts weren't challenging if you use common sense, but I decided that a professional would be a lot quicker and you have to get an alignment anyway so it's not a lot of money saved doing it yourself.

Good info. I may leave this task to the experts.

I forgot to mention that I took the removed shocks to the local Porsche Centre to change the springs over. I couldn't borrow the special spanner to hold the centre spindle so decided it was cheaper to have it done than buy a spanner for a one time use.

Will you be wanting to do anything else such as lowering or tracking/alignment while getting this done?

I want to keep the stock height. An alignment probably isn't a bad idea though.

The way the Porsche front shock is set up, you will need to do an alignment after changing it out, to ensure the camber setting is correct.

I replaced the struts myself not long after getting my '92 and finding the originals still on after 130,000 miles !
Not difficult. No exotic tools. Also have a seperate thread on doing the fronts.
