Fun with an F430....
This morning was pootling along on the motorway, sun out, clear road, and I noticed a nice looking 'wide' motor joining ahead. I accelerated to catch it up and it was a real beauty: black Ferrari 430 ....
Anyway, went past him, gave him some lift-off pops, and a big thumbs up, which he acknowledged. After a bit of traffic I noticed him coming up rapidly and he gave me a flash so I pulled in and let him come up beside me. Then he dropped a gear and floored the throttle - lovely Ferrari high-rev scream!
So I took up the challenge in my 14 year old jalopy and did similar (dropped a gear) and let off the beautiful howl of my straight through pipes. I was delighted to see that we were pretty well neck-and-neck for quite a way, until he began to open up a gap gradually, by which time, after glancing down at my speedo, I felt it best practice to ease of the throttle, and flashed my lights in defeat.
Great fun, and was nice to see how these amazing cars can hold their heads high against modern exotica.
PS: On the same stretch of road earlier in the week, a sweet Lambo G gave me a friendly thumbs up, although traffic was too heavy to play.

re. the belt comment, indication that a Ferrari is not capable of consistent/ constant hard driving like our 911's....as if we didn't know already!
And I don't think its so unbelievable that we could match these modern cars, the 0-60 of a 430 is around 4 secs, ours is low 4's in reality, and when you ignore our off boost periods (as this was a rolling start) our turbos are most likely faster mid range.
AND our torque figures remain impressive even by modern technological standards!

I am a Porsche guy 100%, I can tell you this from experience. I have drive the F430 several times and it will beat a STOCK 930/965 all day long with no problem.
However, I have been the Italian route and I will never go back, Porsche all the way

A few years ago a local ferrari club was having a sunday morning cannibal run to some undisclosed location, with some very new and powerful red beasts. This was between friends and they wanted to test there new performance cars with other ferrari's that claimed to be the fastest in the area, and possibly the world.
However a fellow Rennlister caught wind of this, and slept at a road side turnout all night so he would not miss the event. He decided to bring his 1986 slantnose 911 turbo....
(Do i have to tell you the rest.....) OK. He waved at all 5 red prancing horses, as the old white 911 passed at over 200 mph. " i thouht it was snowing" a fellow ferrari friend said.
It wasn't me, but I loved porsche ever since.

1 - The F430 has timing chains........not belts.
2 - The T-belt change on it's predecessor, the F360, is $3K USD.....every 5 years or 50 kms, more or less.
3 - The current crop of Ferrari cars are "mechanically" fabulous in every respect.
4 - Activate the launch control on the F430, put the mannetino in race mode and punch it......the 964 turbo doesn't have a chance.....and it will be equivalent to a 997TT, give or take few tenths either way. Do that 4-5 times however and you'll be buying a clutch.

I love Porsches and I'm a huge collector of them too. I currently own a '94 Turbo S Flatnose (the fastest and best stock 964 ever made) and I own a 430 Ferrari.
I am telling you for a fact - same driver driving both cars. The 430 is MUCH faster. Now, I am not taking anything away from my Flatnose. I would never trade my Flatnose for a 430, but comparing the two speed wise is just stupid.

Wow, this thread has turned out to be quite a discussion! It was just a bit of (over)enthusiasm after a bit of fun driving.
Its guys like you who own both that can give us the real low-down.
Even though of course the 430 is faster than my mildly modified 965, its around 5 times more expensive but certainly not 5 times faster!
