Default Something's still spinning after I turn off the ignition

When I turn off my ignition, the engine stops, and I hear what sounds like a noisy bearing spinning down slowly. It takes about 5 seconds to stop. I can only hear it if I have the hood up, so it's not all that noisy. It's just that I don't recall it happening in the past. Any ideas what part this might be?

The car has air conditioning, for what it's worth.

Does this happen when the AC is on? If so, your bearing on the sondensor might be going south. Wait a sec, you are as far south as it goes (AUS), lol.

I'll have to check and compare A/C on and off. Although my guess is that when I last heard it, the A/C was off.

Gnosis, there are 2 parts to the AC compressor, one parts that spins all the time with the AC belt and the other operated by a clutch which engages when you turn your AC off.
I get a feeling your bearings on the compressor are making that noise. See if you can isolate the area.

Okay. I'm about to replace belts etc. so while I'm in there I'll do some tests centred around the A/C unit.

Thanks,

Clayton

Clayton,

Check it's not one of the cooling fans bearings squealing on it's run down. You can pull the fuse for 1 fan which will cause the other to go into warp speed and this should give you time to listen to it running down. Replace fuse for fan 1 and repeat for fan 2. It's a 2 minute check and will at least allow you you chalk the fans off the check list. I'm brand new to these cars so I could be talking complete and utter rubbish of course!

Ned, excellent call. Sometimes the fan can rub against the shroud and create similar sounds as well.
