According to the factory maintenance manual of any 968 it lists 60k miles for the belt replacement so they must be different. Again, lots of improvements in the 969 over the 944. That said, I wouldn't wait for 60k miles.

The Hydro tensioner helps that some, but they really do have the same issues because its the same pump design as the rest. I had my pump start leaking on my 968 motor at 60k miles. It was an OEM pump installed about 10 years ago. You win some you lose some.

OP if the bearings haven't flat spotted from sitting, i'd probably reuse it.

Since about 90% of my P-car experience were on cars that didn't have a water pump; was the leak at the bearing? Can you test by attempting to move the pulley to see if there is play at the bearing?

Also don't forget ( directly under the valve cover) about the internal cam driven chain and the tensioner guides for this chain, change every 75,000 / 80,000 miles.

A quick follow-up....

I ended up changing the WP and am glad I did. It's obviously easier to change out the thermostat with the pump removed and I discovered the rubber seal inside the pump that the thermostat mates with had deteriorated to the point where it was crumbling - not sure why but maybe wrong coolant at one time. I'm now running G13 and trust that it's ok for these cars.

My temp gauge now sits evenly at 9 o'clock where before it would constantly cycle between the 2nd and 3rd mark.

Thanks for everybody's feedback.

I went with a new Geba pump. It came with all gaskets and fittings in the box. No issues so far.
