Default Rear Bumper seal

So I’m refitting my rear bumper after the car has had a complete strip repaint. There’s a groove for the rubber strip to sit in which I intend to place the seal in before I tighten the top fixing clamps that secures the bumper. So what is puzzling me is why the genuine seal has one end tapered and also a steel pin comes with it. Any help and fitting tips greatly appreciated.

It's been a long time since I messed with those but I think the pin slide into the end of the seal and that allows you to bend the end of the seal around an edge to hide it or secure it.
