Default Caster mount blocks

My recently acquired toy (MY94 968CS) often makes a crisp metal-on-metal knock as the load changes on front suspension. The sound seems to come from around RH A-arm area, but hard to be sure. There is no appreciable affect on steering.

The car is fitted with the later version caster mount blocks (951.341.023.01). On inspection the RH caster mount block appears to be a bit worse for wear and weeping oil. I know Nissan make some oil-filled rubber mounts and I'm wondering if these Porsche mounts are oil-filled too?

I gather this is a common problem area with 968, but would appreciate any advice on whether this is likely to be the cause of my knock, or of other areas I should check.

Also - for track work does anyone substitute these caster mount blocks with neoprene bushes or similar to get even more rigidity and predictability?

Sparky - I do not believe the mount is fluid-filled. One of mine was oil-soaked, but this was from a power steering fluid leak. Options are usually metal-only bits that come with or are designed for aftermarket arms (Charlie Arms, Fabcar, Racers Edge, etc.). Not sure if these work with stock arms. I would check the website of www.paragon-products.com for this.

Thanks Dave. Had a look on Paragon and found these http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/re_mc9000.htm They're pretty pricey so I'd best learn a little more before I dive into buy:-
Will these make suspension jolt unbearable on the street ?
Are there any better alternatives that aren't so pricey?

I really didn't notice a difference in ride/vibration, just a bit more consistently crisp, so don't let that be a concern. I haven't had any rubber in the front a-arm area for a year and don't miss it at all.

Now, all the other solid-mount / rubber-delete stuff I'm doing throughout the rest of the car... ask me about that in a week or so when the car comes back from the shop

Yes, all the caster mounts are a bit expensive.

They're the standard 17" rims that came with my MY03 Boxster S, I kept them when I realised they would work on the 968. The Boxster went with the other set - 18's.

The fronts are 17 x 7, the rears 17 x 8.5. The rear offsets are perfect (55mm) but the fronts are only 48 and also the centre hole doesn't fit over the 968 grease cap. So I've fitted 8mm spacers and all's well.

I get frequent comments on how good they look, so its not just me ;-)

Sparky-

Caster mounts are not oil filled, just rubber. Check your front sway bar bushings where the bar-to-car bracket is on the right. Power steering fluid has a tendency to leak on to the bushing degrading it to the point it falls out. Your metal noise may be the bar and bracket hitting.
