Default 17" 968 oem wheels

Damian & Raj,

Can you tell me what the spec was for the bigger wheels available through Porsche for the 968 ('92 - '95)? Was it 7's & 9's or 7.5's and 9's (or wider in the rear)? PCA F class allows one inch larger wheels than stock, e.g., 7 x 17 stock would allow 8 x 18 & 9 x 17 stock allows for 10 x 18.

I will be ordering some lightweight wheels for racing and want to go as big as I can within the parameters allowed for PCA club racing.

Raj,

The wheel spec for the 968 RS (viz., turbo) doesn't count because that wasn't a car that one could simply purchase through a Porsche dealer as a factory option.

Thanks.

Richard

P.S.: Raj, Have you been to the track with the 951 yet? Have you installed a cage? You are welcome to the cage in my former (R.I.P.) 968, but you'll need to go get it out of the car (probably) by next week. My "new" track car is nearing completion (at least for testing purposes) and the black '93 chassis is soon to be scrapped.

That's what I thought, but just wasn't positive.

Thanks, Bruce.

Rich, I have had no luck finding time. The way it looks I will probably be lucky to even get 1 or 2 events this year. Just too many commitments with the family. It reminds me why I sold the SY coupe to begin with and here I am with a track car and no time.
Its frustrating at times but hopefully it will get better or else I might just give up on the whole idea eventually.

2 guys, 1 car, and no time to schedule a track day-we're pretty pathetic, right? I did try to do last Sunday's Auto-x and the steering rack pump lunched itself-I was 100 yards away from the course . . .

Okay boys, this just won't do. Need to get this Raj/Damian track car on track.

Here's a couple of dates that I should be at Lime Rock with Hudson Valley Region PCA, 7/27 and 9/14 - Thursdays both. (There's a small chance that I would be in Canada @ Mosport instead of LRP on 7/27, but I doubt that will happen as it would result in too much time out of the office for me).

I will be available to instruct on both dates @ LRP. If I know that you're registered in advance, I can ask the track chair if I can ride with one of you.

The problem with one car and two drivers at the same event is, unless you're in different run groups, (1 guy instructed and 1 guy in an uninstructed group), you only get 1/2 the seat time. If one of you comes on 7/27 and the other on 9/14, then you can get a full four 25-30 min. sessions.

Assuming my own car is running, I can take you out for a couple of laps in the 968. Also, our friend Joe may be there for 1 or both these dates with his 968 Firehawk racecar which he drives like his butt's on FIRE!

So, let's pick some dates and get this car on track.

I'm in Nashville the first event, and Tucson the second . . .

I'm sorry Damian, but that's not the correct answer.

We track junkies all have other commitments with work, family and all, but we also have our priorities straight:

1. TRACK
2. Everything else.
3, 4, 5, 6, etc. See 2 above.

Anyway, you and Raj should look at Dale's D.E. calendar (you can view it off the Jersey Shore Region's site), check out the dates and the tracks and let me know what looks good for you and I'll see what I can do too.

Ciao.

Well, the good news is I picked up a 2001 Ford Explorer for us to use as a tow car, now we're looking for a trailer.

Damian,

I get the sense that at this point there isn't any rush. So, maybe wait until the end of this season and I will sell you my '97 Dively, which is an open, steel trailer. Light weight (around 1000 lbs), electric brakes, tows nice. I use a GMC Envoy as a tow vehicle and have no problem cruising at 75 mph. Rack for tires and fuel jugs.

With the race car I will eventually need to go to an enclosed trailer (meaning I will need a bigger tow vehicle too) because there's just more stuff to bring along for a club race than for D.E. And, in between events (and seasons) the car can stay on the enclosed trailer.

Ciao.

Richard, how much do you want for that Dively? How much weight can it handle?

$1200. Not for sale just yet. Track season is just started here.

Registration says 10,000 lbs. I have only had Porsches (911 & 968) on the trailer. So, with my cars plus extra set of wheels & tires, trailer spare and 25 gals of fuel jugs, I've only put approx. 4,000 lbs. (tops) on the trailer at any given time.

The neat thing about this trailer are the long ramps that both fold up and slide under the trailer. So when you take down the portion that folds up and pull out the portion of the ramp that stores under the trailer, you've doubled the length of the ramp, greatly reducing the angle from trailer bed to the ground - which is very helpful for lowered vehicles (like race cars). The portion that folds up is made of steel grate, so air passes through the upfolded ramps whilst towing, (otherwise those ramps would act like big "air brakes" a la the M-B 300 SLR @ Lemans circa 1954).
