Looking at a 968 need insight please
Hello guys and gals, I am looking forward to entering the small owners club of 968's and I wanted to share the prospect I ran across. The car is a 1994 has 125k 6spd with LSD and sunroof. Interior is grey/silver. Price is $10,500/neg. I can probably get 500-1000 knocked off. But I will have to fly down and drive it ~600 miles back or have it transported.
The Good:
T-belt, etc done 12k ago have proof
Recent Asmoil transaxle oil change
LSD
All controls work except for Cruise
125k miles
Paint shiny
CD player
No rips in seats
No rust
Clean engine compartment
Recent clutch by last owner but no proof
New brake pads up front fresh rotors
Passed emissions and state inspection
The Bad:
AC works but is weak.
Couple small cracks right by tow hook mount on front bumper cover
Spider webbing on a section of front bumper cover
One mismatched tire -- same size though
Cruise does not work
Carpet behing pass seat is wore down
One huge knarly dash crack w/some smaller ones
Small tear/abrasion on drivers side door panel near top
Plastic hinge on center counsel arm rest tearing
Do the 968's have the internal type oil cooler like the 944's or an external type?
Any "most common" problem parts with these cars? Like chain tensioners, etc?
I have more picturs detailing the Bad attributes but they are all around 230kb
Thank you all for your help!!

I just got a response back on the same car. I think its a pretty good deal, but some of the body work has me worried, especially the wheel rub. Since I won't be able to see it before purchase, I am hesitant.

At that price if hell came to high water, you pull the motor $3500,tranny 2500 (i get first dibs)brakes 400-450,mirrors 350,door handles, rear spoiler etc. Charlie I dont think you can go wrong.

Hey Marty, thanks for the PM and those details! I really need a steering wheel with a deep dish and/or a quick release hub to get the wheel in back of my knees so I can pivot my legs around better.
I was thinking of just the part value in the car as well. Ultimately, I am looking for a driver that I can keep for another 5+ years.
I would give you first dibs

968 has an external oil cooler, similar to the 951. The 968 shares the same need to check the cam chain tensioner pads and cam chain as the other 16v motors. It also have a device which actuates the vario-cam which 'wears' out. I am not to familar with it so i cannot really give you solid advice in that area.
Something else you might want to check is to see if the transmission ever had the ring and pinion checked. The 968 transmissions had many problems with this as they were not set correctly at the factory. The car will probably have a very distinct whine if it has not been taken care of. Im not sure if this applies to all model years of 968, but i do know its a common problem one should look out for.
Other than that, that is a very nice car and looks to be a pretty good price if it were in my neck of the woods.

I had to quick check the garage because that looks like my car. The R&P problem as i understand it was fixed prior to 93. I can't add anything re the engine because its not in the car yet.
