pinion issue
This information was taken from an Ebay description. (Porsche 968 6 speed transmission without LSD. Came from a never tracked, never crashed 94 968 with 85k miles. No issue with ring and pinion (ring and pinion issues were only on the 92 models. Porsche resolved issue for 93 and beyond) Part # 01E 300 042 J).............. Is this right?

i was told by a shop in california that they're mostly all bad... just some completely failed and others haven't ... he said you should always include a new pinion bearing in any transmission rebuild.
my car is a '94, and i'll probably be doing that when i do my tranny rebuild sometime around 150-160 k miles or when my clutch goes, whichever comes first.

PorscheDude's right.
it's not the R/P, it's the miss-adjusted bearing that fails. If it's not to far gone you can replace just the bearing and race (with the correct preload this time).
