Default Where do you get your R12??

I'm about to install a new compressor and FINALLY have A/C again, just in time before I die of heatstroke.

However, I'm going to need R12 to charge it up...does anybody have a source, preferably a relatively affordable source in or near South Florida?

[Yes I already know this is illegal or something]

Thank you!

I buy mine on eBay (typically $25/can). But to legally buy R12, you need EPA 609 certification -- and most eBay sellers will ask for it. You can get a certification pretty easily on-line with little bit of studying.

I got certification many years ago by taking a mail-in test from this organization:

www.macsw.org

I think they have an online test now.

I was going to pay a guy $95 cash for a tank with 20-21 pounds and a can with another pound. I was required to be certified to drive a Land Cruiser and find his house.

But of course I didn't do it, because that would be illegal. And wrong.

Interesting. Yes, eBay has a bunch of listings with R12 cans. Now, do you get your local garage to put the freon in? Is there a DIY way to do this?

I have a tank and manifold guage set. Have to weigh the tank to get an amount of freon left. Just been sitting in my garage for the last few years. SHipping may be an issue though.

I am researching this as well right now. I have heard from a few different people that they had good success just draining the old system, putting on the new fittings and then adding 134 without evacuating. Another thing that works is propane. I know of a guy who uses propane in an older car because it leaks so bad he got tired of buying 134. Obviously you have a risk of fire but I think it is a small risk. I have a old truck I thinking of trying that trick on.

Yeah aside from serious doubts that propane would cool as efficiently as R134a even, much less R12...can't propane actually explode?
