Usual cause is one or more broken teeth on the small (yellow) gear on stepper motor gear assembly. The teeth break because VDO used some grease which is not compatable with plastic. Replacement gear and instructions can be found on odometergears.com. Just did the repair on my 968. Some instructions will tell you to remove the needle and face plate but on the 968 this is not required. Once you have the speedometer out you can just remove the stepper motor (2 screws) and replace the gear.

I completed this job this evening. Took longer to remove the speedometer needle than it did to disassemble the speedometer and replace the gear. Just be VERY careful when removing the needle so that you don't bend it or break the shaft. PM me if you have any questions.

Congrats Aaron, but you don't need to remove the needle! Next time I have to do one for somebody, I'll put together a DIY with pictures so we're not stuck using old 944 how-to's!!

Aaron or Darryl, Can you please let me know how many teeth/what gears you ordered for the 968? It says to remove and count but if you guys knew I figured I would just pull it out when I replace my gears. Thank you in advance.

Aaron...let me double check my info but I'm fairly certain it's the 15 tooth gear. I used Jeff at odometergears.com
odb and Curt...that was true with the old style mechanical worm gear in the 944 but the 968 doesn't have that setup. If anyone has done this repair themselves and takes a look at the trip meter reset mechanism, it's all electrical and a reset while moving should not damage anything. Now, that being said, I still don't reset it while moving....just in case....!! Unless you're doing a poker run/rally event, don't you usually reset it at fill up time, in which case, you'd be sitting still...I'm just sayin'...

And looking back, it's fairly obvious that removing the speedo needle was completely unnecessary. After doing a fair amount of research, the odometer gear is the "e15" variety. However, I removed my original gear to manually count the teeth (don't forget the broken one(s)!!) just to make sure I got the right gear. Seemed like cheap insurance.

Well hey, if Darryl wants to take a vacation to lovely Miami Beach, he's welcome to fix my odometer while he's here.
On the other hand, it IS nice to be able to claim that my car magically stays at 88,020 miles, perpetually...
