Default The Unknown (To Me) 968 Forum

So I mention on the catch-all water cooled front engined forum that I picked up a seemingly long-known Rennlist 968, and Ernie 9468 points me to this model specific sub-forum. Can't say I've ever noticed it, since it's buried so far down from where I usually go (911, 964, 993, Racing Forums).

Here's the thread I previously posted. Pictures are basically as the car was when the ad (also listed) ran. It's hardly been driven in the past two years as it went on cross country transport from MD to CA.

congratulations. drive it. beat on it and do the maintenance. i drive my 968 like it's a Honda Accord. only a lot faster. everywhere... convinced i can drive the car 2/3rds of a million miles before installing a proper Goodwrench replacement motor. i problably won't wait that long. the 968 is a nice car but you can't really make a strong argument that it's a collectable.

Congrats on the purchase! Ignore OD at first, he means well but forgets what its like for other 968 owners who actually appreciate the 3.0 litre for what it is... Have fun, a few tasteful upgrades really wake these cars up! i liked mine when i got it but a few tweaks later and im in love all over again! have fun, stay safe and Happy New Year!

Hey Ken,

Nice to see you over here. The 968 is a very nice under appreciated p-car. Bart on the 993 forum has one as his DD. What's your plans with the new acquisition?

Congrats on the new ride Ken. Great looking car that looks to have been maintained exceptionally well. The 968 is a different animal from the 993/964. Having now spent a lot of seat time in both, I've learned to really appreciate driving this one. Enjoy!

I hadn't realized that there were so many 993 + 968 owners here. Congrats and hopefully we'll see you around for some local drives.

OK, looks like what I linked in above was just the for sale ad from when the car was sold a couple of years ago...........

So, with the possibility of boring everyone, I'll give a brief recap of where this car fits into the Porsches I've had over the years. I got an education in the then-new 944 in 1985 when I opened a Porsche/BMW shop in Phoenix, just after I graduated from college. I didn't know jack about 944s, I was a 911 guy. But they kept coming in. First, for maintenance to escape dealer pricing, then dead on the hook. First timing belt I ever did was actually a car still under warranty which Porsche wouldn't fix. Not sure what was going on in Florida, etc., but in Phoenix we were seeing timing belt problems even before 15K. My VW-centric machinist could get the valve job done at a decent cost, and I brought the job in at an affordable price. I think I became the go-to guy for 944s pretty much overnight. Ugh.

Enter the 944 Turbo. As soon as the first one hit, owners wanted them faster. Andial was selling an "upgrade" to the boxes, and (I think) Kerry Morse was selling an alternate turbo. Fixed many of the cars up that way, and then a few of the guys got track serious so since I had a proper alignment rack I got most of the suspension mod work. Parts certainly weren't sophisticated like we have now, but I remember leftovers from various 944 racing series being shipped to me for installation.

I've only owned a couple of these variants personally. First was a dead engine '83 with Fuchs and sport seats I picked up for next to nothing right after I moved back to the Bay Area. Oddly, it was located only a mile or so from where this 968 resided. A fully optioned '82 924 was dumped on me by a customer whose wife said to get rid of it. I could not believe how slow that car was. Was a nice 5 lug car that you always wondered how someone could spend that much on a dog. I also picked up a "dead" 3 year old 924S some used car dealer got stuck with. I convinced them the trans was a lost case, and they took the '82 924 + $2K. Turned out all it needed was a clutch. Which I pretty much knew. Club racing was rumored, and I thought it would be a great car to run in stock class as I could drive it everywhere with all my gear in it. Ended up buying a business though, and all the money wasting had to be put on hold.

So here we are with this 968. Nice enough car, just needs to be a bit more domesticated. Always amazes me how all of these "sports" cars get modified in the name of performance. Leave the _______ thing stock, unless you have a specific track application. Short shifter on this thing is horrible. Ride with the spring/shock setup is the worst I've experienced in one of these chassis. Tires are ill-suited for just driving around.

Where do I go with it? The sport seats from the '95 faux RS need to be changed to black, then installed. Need a smaller diameter steering wheel, as my preferred driving position has always given upper leg rub on these. Replace the stereo with something that has an aux input so I can run my satellite. If I don't put on one of the extra sets of Big Reds I have laying around, maybe some 16" wheels to put on a more compliant tire. (Though I have the ice/snow tires from the 4S on Cup 1s!) And figure out if these shocks are on full hard, or scrounge up a stock set of springs/shocks.

Ha ha...........NOT a project!

But as requested, here are a couple of photos as the car exists today. Put some Fikses on for a bit as one of the rear Cup 2s has a crack. Hope it doesn't rain, as the RA1s have next to no tread.

And I staged it against the 4S to contrast Arctic v. Polar Silver.

Welcome and nice rides. I have your cars twin in a parts coupe if you ever cannot find something drop me a line. Like the radical? Always loved that ride.

+2 on the different personalities, love them both.

Cheers, mike
