Default What do you guys think of this one?

Not my first choice in color, but I am thinking if I want to track this, I should not be so picky I am still debating if I want an under 100k nice car, or a nicely loved and used car for track DE. I forgot to ask about the cam chain and tensioner pads, if I recall those wore out. My 235k 92 I bought from the original owner never had it changed and I sold the car before I got that far to look. I plan to be in Ashburn in a few weeks for work so time permitting I will check it out.

His dad is the 2nd owner, he the 3rd.

The body is original with original paint. The wheels were repainted but look like factory. There's no damage history.

My sources say a 1994 manufacturing date, is this a reVIN or something?

Looks pretty nice. Decent options, 398 17" cup2s, 437/438 dual full power seats, Xd4 painted crest center caps, 490 hi-fi sound, and a 595 body colored rear spoiler. 1 of 113 in Polar silver, 1 of 22 polar silver with the classic grey interior. It is a 718 car which means it was a 94 (build of May 1994) and reVINed to a 95 by Porsche.

Better color, soft top, lower mileage, lower price.

Two rare cars. The Amazon green cab is 1 of 8 with that interior. The Aventurine cab is 1 of 17 with that interior.

The car looks nice, and if you wrench it yourself, it wouldn't be very expensive to get it anything fixed to bring it up to snuff. My car has the same mileage and runs like a top! Obviously you need a coupe if you are going to track it.

my original clutch went at 168 k miles.
my new Sachs clutch was $1200 [and is available for purchase] to the lucky high bidder.

btw, the middle of the second 100,000 miles of a 968's life is the gateway to repair shop city.... if I had pulled this engine before 160 k miles I would have saved myself about 8 grand in service in repairs. if I had a 968 from birth, I would do the belts, rollers/tensioner, H20 pump and AC compressor at 75 k miles....

and that's the last thing I would do until about 150 k miles - when I would do the belts, rollers/tensioner, H20 pump and AC compressor again, along with the cam pads/chain/hall sensor, etc

AND THE CLUTCH.

Looks good to me, I'd jump on it. The cabrios are cool, but I wouldn't buy one for a track car (and at least in my experience, are typically quite a bit less expensive).

Yeah, not sure to go with something that will need $$$ in repairs in the next year or so, or pay more for one that someone says a lot of work has been done... Makes me wonder if I should purchase the car and first think have done is pull the valve cover and replace what needs replacing.

*then again, my strategy is flawed,

since allowing asking your cam chain and pads to go 150 k miles would likely promote added wear on the cam sprockets.

one more reason why think these fancy buckets of bolts are to engines like, what Red Lobster is to seafood.

Unless the previous owner is in tune with some of 968's shortcomings, you can expect to spend a good $2-2.5k on just things like cam chain, tensioner pads with belts and rollers. Add to that a front and a rear engine seal and it starts to add. A chain and tensioner pads should be a 75k service item but hardly anyone ever addressed them.

As you mentioned, do you get a cheaper car and spend $5k bringing it up to snuff or do you pay more $ up front and have a car completely sorted. Unfortunately, most people take the 1st route because they go in with a smaller $ entry point, without looking at the big picture.

Ask around and you will see how much each car cost in getting it up to spec in the 1st few yrs. Especially cars that were 75k miles and over.

Polar silver is a great color on 968's.
