Unhappy Windshield cracked!

A rock chip started a crack at the base of my coupe windshield. Local glass companies have nothing for 668's or 944's. Is there any hope? I would happily live with an antenna wire if I had to.

Hi John, I got my cab windshield from Sunset. I have had issues getting it installed. We should have a phone conversation if you like. As for coupe windshields, there was a guy in Boston who had about a dozen of them for sale recently. Hopefully someone can get you contact info.

Had my windshield replaced about 4 yrs ago. Couldn't find a 968 windshield in the US and my insurance wouldn't pay for a 968 shipped over from Germany so I installed a 944 (same size) and just clipped off the wires to the embedded antenna so it would fit fine.

Thanks, Jeff- here's hoping someone will chip in about the Boston thing. As to 944's: they may well be NLA now???

Let's hope not. Have you called a Porsche dealer to check availability/$? Sunset is good, I get same pricing from Scottsdale Porsche locally for me, with a PCA discount. They usually match Sunset.

I recall the cab windshield was $450 plus $150 for shipping.

You might try Pilkington Classic less than 1/2 the price for my 356 compared to Vendors and they ship.

There was a thread about this a few months ago. i thought the outcome was dealer available. I sold one I had stored at Partsheaven for about $600 and lost a windshield about 6 weeks later. Mine was replaced by Safelite. This is about a year ago. There was a time about 4 years ago when there were only 6 or 8 in the USA.

Was that a 968 windshield or a 944 windshield? I have some small chips in mine and would like to get a 968 windshield. I guess a call to the dealer is in order.

Thanks to one and all for this! I went with Retro Automotive in New Hampshire (Vermont)- ThomasRyan's ebay link. They sell direct:
http://www.retroautomotiveproducts.com/

I did buy the last coupe windshield and can save a bunch on shipping by driving to pick it up. I'm going to assume I can stuff the windshield into an Audi A4 wagon with lots of cushions in the back. They have some cab windshields left.

Pilkington also has windshields, but they're about $85.00 more expensive and I would have to ship.
https://www.pilkingtonclassics.com/

Again, thanks to everyone here. A great community!

Great John, now let me share with you my install issues.

I went with a local guy who was recommended. It turns out he really didn't know how to do the install and I'm still dealing with issues.

The correct way to install:

Remove (cut) old windshield out of frame
Remove all old windshield calking from frame
New windshield has calking attached to it from the factory
Attach and trim windshield to frame seal PRIOR to install
Apply a light coating of urethane to factory calking
Flip windshield and install in frame
Ensure that seal is pushed below fenders on both sides

You are set!

My guy screwed it up.
He removed all the factory calking from the windshield
He did not clean the original calking out of the frame
This resulted in a not 100% even/level install
My installer also did not install the seal prior to windshield installation and left it to me
This seal install is VERY difficult once the windshield is in place
I'm on my second seal
If I can't get it right the windshield may have to come out and may very well break.

So, pick your installer carefully!

Jeff

I just checked with the local Porsche dealer. All Porsche lists now is a combo windshield for 968 and 944, which means they have the embedded antenna wire, green tint band. $837. So you saved $300!!!

It will be interesting to see if Retro or Pilkington actually have 968 windshields or if they are selling 944 combos.

I am in the market for one myself. I believe we need to get the ones that are meant for cars with Air Bags so Jeff is right about the Sekurit logo. The ones for cars without Air Bags (probably for 944 w/o air bags) are way less expensive though.
