Just regarding FVD again, If you do buy the FVD tune,

FVD will provide additional free ECU tunes files if you add additional mods to your 981S.

For example; if you add Sport Headers or Race Headers or IPD plenem or gt3 Throttle body at a later stage, FVD will provide you with a FREE ECU tune file to make the most of your new mods.

That's great to hear! I went through this same process on my 128i, but by the time I was ready to re-flash due to adding headers, the tuner had left the company. Fortunately, they were all on good terms and eventually figured out how to get me an upgraded tune.

The best value solution (by far) is lurk around the for sale board a bit, Cobb Accessports for 991.1/981 cars come up frequently around the $750 to 800 mark. You can spend a few hundred more on a pro tune to get proper performance as the included tunes are (purposefully) soft.

The pro tune will be more or less your only real cost because if you want to flip the accessport there's hardly any depreciation if you already bought it used.

In terms of results, everyone ends up in the same spot pretty much. The tuning for these engines is very mature and stopped developing a long time ago.

BGB makes a great tune as well, to add to the list.

Default Softronic is Great

Installed in my 2014 981S in June of 2020 and I can really feel the difference . No actual dyno though but the
boost is there. Scot at Softronic is both patient and helpful.

Researched the IPD plenum the larger throttle body as well but whatever small boost it may give does not seem worth the cost.

looks like BGB may just be retailing Cobb's product on their website?

This is a dyno of my 2016 Cayman S PDK. This was after install of Fabspeed sport headers, and custom Cobb tune. Sadly the dyno was down the day I did the install so I have no pre-upgrade dyno of my car. These pulls were a couple months later. However, from what I have seen from other dyno charts and heard from other owners, is that most stock 981 Cayman S cars dyno around 265 HP. So, I gained roughly 30 HP max. That would be close to the amount of HP you are looking to capture. I know there are a lot of variables when looking at figures like this, but this is at least one solid data point for you.

Just regarding the op car and what he would expect.

The Cayman S has a 10bhp increase over the Boxster S due to ECU restriction, therefore I would expect 40hp+ increase with a Cobb tune and fab speed headers on the 981BS.

Cayman 325+30 = 355hp
Boxster 315+40 = 355hp

I am not sure a cobb tune can compete with the experts at FVD.

Giving both cars 355hp or 350bhp

Interesting the FVD tune provides 352hp + FVD sport headers 16hp = 368hp or 362bhp.

No, they use the AccessPort platform, however they offer their own tunes as well. There is a noticeable difference between the Cobb Stage 2 93 and the BGB baseline prior to logging for the custom map. I was surprised that it registered on old butt dyno. I'm very pleased with BGB.

I am going to reach out to FVD to see if they would do a group buy. How many people would be interested?

Here's another recommendation for the Softronic tune. My '09 CS track car has: GT3 TB, IPD plenum, BGB Cargraphic catless headers, and a Softronic tune. Dyno results were: 293whp / 254tq on a Mustang 4wd dyno (needed for proper dyno with pdk in sport+ mode). NASA (https://www.nasaproracing.com/hpde) adds 10% for an equivalent Dynojet number, so 322 whp/279tq. Plus, the support from Scott at Softronic is outstanding.

Cheers!

Who might be able to chime in with knowledge re: the GTS and these tunes?
When I had a base Boxster I had the FVD tune. I felt it did something (helped feel more powerful at lower revs).
Now with a GTS w/ Sport Chrono my fear is the GTS _is_ a tune, and what more can you tune on top? If somebody can point me to some evidence aside from the vendor charts, I'd love that, and I would be +1 for an FVD group by, I love their tunes, I am just not convinced I'd notice.
