Default tire recommendations?

my cayman needs new rear tires at just past 20K miles - that seems kind of absurd - the current tires are goodyear 265/40ZR19 - I wonder if there is a more suitable tire for a non-track car? to me, wear is important, maximum stickiness is not. any specific opinions?

Does Goodyear have a warranty on those tires? If so, they might give you a discount on another set.

I know Michelin has done that with tires that did not make the warranted miles on my wife's Highlander. 59% off in one case.

If you end up buying a new set, Michelin Pilot Super Sport are highly regarded for street and track and have a mileage warranty, but check the details on that if it is part of your purchase criteria.

Good luck,

Eddie

As others have suggested, 20K is not unusual for a set of tires on a Cayman.
I changed out my front tires (OE Continentals) at about 21K. They may have had 4-5K left, but for safety sake I change my tires while there is still some depth to the tread.
Rear tires usually don't last as long as the front though and I changed the rears at about 16K.
For a good combination of longevity, traction, and smoothness I like both Continental DW and Michelin PS2 (or PSS).

for daily driving Michelin PS 2 are great.

Sumitomos are cheap, but are pose problems. I had to turn of PASM off all the time.

well, I actually have 23K miles, the tires on the car (as it came from the dealer) are Goodyear Eagle F1, so thanks to Eddie's suggestion above, I went to the Goodyear site to check

Eagle® F1 Asymmetric All-Season* 45,000 mi. (U.S.) 75,000 km. (CAN), so the tires should only be half worn. I'll see if I can find out what that means in terms of replacement. I also bought the wheel/tire warranty when I got the car (so far one flat that it paid for, $450). We shall see what transpires - I am not too optimistic, but miracles can happen.

If you truly have "All Season tires" they have a much higher treadwear rating than the typical "Performance Summer" tires that our cars usually come with, and you should see more than 20k in that case.

For example the F1 Asymmetric All-Season has a treadwear rating of 500 whereas the F1 Asymmetric Max Performance Summer has a treadwear of 240.
It would surprise me if your Porsche came from the factory with All Season tires as all that I have ever seen come with max performance tires, but maybe in some circumstances this can change.....?

I doubt your car came with all seasons. 20k out of a summer performance rear tire is normal.

the local tire store is telling me that ONLY the Goodyear tires are available, so that may answer the question - I asked that they find out about Michelin also. They got back to me and said that no Michelin tire is approved for my car, and that Goodyear is the only choice available anywhere in the USA.

I dont know what theshipping costs are but this is a give away becasue I have no use for these. If you can arrange shipping, I am glad to lower the price too.

You are in the realm of fine print. Us guys who run old air cooled 911s have been dealing with this for years. Unless you run your tires square and can rotate them the tire manufacturer will only cover the tires for half of their warranty life. This is going to be true for pretty much any and every manufacturer on any car that runs offset sizes front and rear.
