987.2 Sport Mode

987.2 Sport Mode
I just ordered the Sport Mode retrofit for my 987.2 2.9L from Suncoast and now I'm eagerly awaiting delivery. The only mod I have made so far is adding a Carnewal GT exhaust. Does anyone have an opinion on whether or not Sport Mode has any impact on the exhaust note? It seems to me that the bit of remapping that the Sport Mode does would add a bit more sound to the exhaust note, accelerating and idling, but that's just a guess. Does anyone have any experience to share? I'm twiddling my thumbs, locked at home, impatient... lol
I know the Sport Mode does more for the PDK models than the manuals but regardless, I wanted OEM looking Sport mode and not just an aftermarket tune. A number of people whom have had the Sport Mode retrofit or Sport Chrono option say the upgrade is worth it, even on a manual trans. If it makes even a 20% improvement in the fun factor, it will be worth the $1k to me. Plus it's another button to list on the specs if I ever sell it lol.
Quarantine sucks!

Three Wheelin'
Perceptible changes:
Effectively though, for any fixed throttle opening the exhaust will be louder in Sport mode, but no more than depressing the loud peddle a bit more...
Enjoy!
I also took the Chrono out, made it a nice desk ornament, and changed for a VDO clock - plug and play!
See ya.
- Increased sensitivity to throttle mapping. Smaller throttle pedal increments result in greater openings. Switching from Sport mode to normal on a fixed throttle setting, drops back openings so you slow down.
- Faster PDK shifts, thumping the clutch out to engage of full throttle shifts, and not feeding it in slowly for smoothness.

You do on PDK cars but manuals don't have Sport Plus.
Also if the OP or others are curious, the Sport mode also adjusts the PSM/ABS envelope to be wider before intervention and has a hard rev limiter.

Let us know what you think of it. I have a 2.9 as well and had ordered a Sprint Booster and then changed my mind and canceled it so I could get the OEM sport mode retrofit instead. They sent the Sprint Booster anyway and I just ended up keeping it haha. Still kind of wish I had gotten the OEM option.

in my 991 with PDK, SC and all the electrical witchcraft it makes a substantial difference.
In my Manual, SC 987 with passive dampers and no electric "things" I feel no difference in sport mode. It does have an FVD tune though.

For example, threshold braking approaching a turn and then trail braking into the turn, a non-sport car will activate PSM with a single ABS signal and a sport car will go farther ie. two wheel ABS/deeper envelope before activation.
The PSM/ABS modules are separate from the engine parameter tuning they do so an aftermarket flash shouldn't affect those.

It's a wonderful thing for the PDK cars - ups the shift RPM, downshifts more readily, overall - more fun without adding harshness to the car. I'd describe the change in clutch action as firm - not "banging".. Mine is in SPORT mode as soon as it's warmed up, even for around-town driving (makes it squirt quicker..) I almost never use SPORT PLUS - it's a real racetrack mode - most shifts go out to 7,000 before upshifting... which is fairly extreme sounding, and the clutch action is harsher.
And I do have both SPORT/SPORT-PLUS and a Sprint Booster - both were on the car when I got it. The Sprint Booster is set at 2 and is never changed. Someday I have to try turning it up - mebbe all the way to 3..

Less than $2,000 all-in. The software/hardware can be bought from places like SunCoast and other discounting Porsche parts places, but the software at least requires Porsche to install it, with a link to Germany to verify and attach the VIN for it. I think the software/hardware has been around $1,500. I imagine a dealer can do it in 2 hours - so less than $500, maybe.

Since it has no way of controlling the shifting of a manual transmission car - that's about all I'd expect out of it. In this case a SprintBooster is probably a better deal. Same results for ~1/8th the cost.

Unless you're going to the track in which case you'll notice what I described above. If you're never getting into non-sport PSM/ABS, then you wouldn't notice that change.
You might notice the hard limiter but it sounds like few here are touching the 7456 rpm limiter also, so then it is the throttle sensitivity.

Advanced
In my case it's the overly aggressive PSM that gets annoying. I manually shift the PDK and don't find the throttle response too bad.
That said I don't think $2k is worth it for a very marginal improvement on a car worth less than 30.

When I did it on my manual it was $900 + 2 hr so about $1300..that said, the difference for a track guy is like having the factory give you 4 settings instead of 2 for different tracks. (Both the Sport/PSM on and Sport/PSM off settings)
Keep in mind on a track, there may be times you'd like to brake one wheel for stability but you can't. The computer can.
That's why on some tracks Sport/PSM on is actually faster than Sport/PSM off or Sport off/PSM off if you're driving properly. I use it as an instructional tool too.
