Is 987 Boxster 2.7L 5-speed trans same as 996 Boxster trans?
So I bought a project 2006 987 Boxster this last year down here real cheap. $600 cheap because it was basically abandoned and had no transmission and no wheels. Its a 2.7L and engine spins freely plus my vin decoding said it came with a 5 speed manual originally. I found a 5 speed manual trans locally for a super good deal but have not pulled the trigger because its from a 1998 2.5L 986 boxster.
All my research on the internet, ebay and such shows they have the same bell housing and seem pretty much like the same transmission, same amount of ribs, mounting points, the case looks identical from front to tail. Some ebay listings show that 996 5 speed manual trans can be used on a 2004 986 boxster and some don't, some show 2005-2008 can take on a 1998 986 boxster trans. This is all for 2.5l cars of course, the s models had larger engines and usually the 6 speed manual which is definitely a different beast than this.
So the questions is can I install a 1998 986 boxster 5 speed on a 2006 987 5 speed boxster? Looks like I can install it but will it work? Again physically they look to be the same transmission. Anything that will be different beside gearing possibly? Will the electric/electronics/connections plugs work? All mounting points seem the same as far as I can tell as well for the cables which looks like my car still has hanging underneath? I dont know much about boxsters, this is my first one and a project at that. I am more of an old school 914/924/944/928 and use to be a old school 911 guy back in the 90s the last time I had one. I just could not leave this pretty decent car to go to the junker and price was right at the time. Hopefully someone here can tell me. I accidentally posted in the 997 911 forum earlier and some one told me to check the Porsche Parts Katalog to see if the trannies have the same part number. Plan at this point is to just attempt to piece the car together and get it running by first getting a transmission in place and buttoned up so to speak. Oh and will do the ims update too. Then I dont even have keys or a title for this project car yet but the next step would be get keys made once I get a correct transmission secured and in possession
Any and all help will be much appreciated.
Thank you From El Paso.

Minor point. When you mention a 1998 2.5L 996 boxster, that would be a 1998 2.5L 986 Boxster. 996 refers to a 911. I only mention that because when I read your title, I was confused.
