Default 987.1 Cayman S Steering wheel upgrade

I though I would Share my steering wheel upgrade project with everyone here. I always was not a fan of the look of the triangle wheel on the 987.1 and also did not like how thin it felt.

I picked up a Wheel off a Wrecked 2018 Macan and an airbag off another one. Then purchased the parts to remove the multifumultifunction and floppy paddles as I have a manual car.

Install was relatively straight forward and came together nice and easy. Here are some pics.

transformed the drive.

Can't speak for the OP but a lot of factors come into play. What kinda wheel do you want? Is it a wheel from a passenger car or a smaller diameter wheel from a GT car? Are you going to buy it new or used? Suncoast charges like $4500 for the Cayman GT4 wheel new, i didn't pay that much of course buying it used. Air bag - new or used? Does it need to be heated and or multi function? If so or if not you might find yourself swapping out the trims in the wheel. I had to replace the back cover b/c the wheel i got was a PDK wheel and my car is a manual. That plastic back cover was $45, I believe from Suncoast. Newer 991 style air bags seem to be more expensive, the cheapest 'used' one i could find was like $650. Probably b/c there aren't that many used ones available yet.

The bolt is a one time use stretch bolt and I think it was like $20 from my local shop. You also need to have a #12 triple square bit. Which are pretty cheap from amazon or the autoparts stores.

Does your horn work???

I’ve done this twice and the solution is to have the car programmed to think it has a multi function wheel. I know it sounds goofy, but it works

I had to recode mine too (as well as swap the CAN ecu for the wheel). Full details here.

That's the GT3 RS wheel, and Porsche charges accordingly.

This is the GT4 Alcantara Wheel:

I'll sell you a strip of red tape for $2k.

So it depends on where you get the wheel and parts from and such. As others have said, if you get the wheel and Airbag new its crazy expensive.

I went with the Steering wheel from a Macan. So I kept an eye on Facebook Marketplace and Auto Wreckers for crashed Macans. I ended up getting the Wheel from Marketplace for around $400, the Airbag I found from an auto Wrecker through Car-part.com and paid like 700+ shipping and then about another 200 or so for the additional parts I needed from Suncoast to convert it to a non-Multifunction and get rid of the Flappy Paddles. So about $1,300 but I am hoping to recoup some of the cost by selling my old Wheel+Airbag and the some of the Parts that I am not using from the Macan Wheel.

Buddy. You keep choosing 2016 -2018 Cayman in your search. I don't know how many times i can type 2023 for you.

What is your goal here? If its to be right, that ship sailed long ago.
