Default 20” wheels on Boxster S

I recently struck a deal to purchase a 987.2 with PDK which the seller swapped 20” Porsche wheels for the stock 19s. I have yet to drive the car and wondered what I should expect with regards to ride comfort and handling. Thanks for posting your thoughts.

The think the concensus is 18s will give the best ride, 20's to me look too big for the car, I've seen many post on here comment theres a noticable ride difference going back to 18's from 19's. On a car like this the look is obviosly very important, the wheels on mine were the stock put back on for the sale and the owner wanted a fair bit for the fancy 19's so I didn't bother. These 18's are now my favorite for this car and I wouldn't swap them, I certainly didn't think that when I bought it. Enjoy your purchase!

Comfort also depends whether you have the base suspension or PASM.

Generally, the 18s will give you the best ride and look good. Remember the 987.1 originally came with 17s. 19 inch wheels will give you a little degraded ride but still look ok. I've never seen a 20 look good on the 987. They do look good on the 981 but that chassis has a longer wheelbase and that helps mask their size.

If the car is what you want, getting a set of 18s or 19s that fit properly is easy. Lots of people sell their OEM wheels, as do eBay dealers.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the helpful responses thus far. Keep ‘em coming.

The original wheels are part of the deal. I’ll be keeping them to try myself. Will likely have one or the other sets for sale in 2-3 weeks.

I’ve got 19” Carrera Classics on my ‘09 and sorta wish I had 18’s.

Yeah... I ditched my 19s and went to 18-inch Ronal S wheels for that reason on my 2009.
So much more comfortable, and countless other reasons... not least of which is better rough road protection and cheaper tires.

20s must be ghastly, and look a bit silly too?

As a counter, I love my factory 19’s on my ‘05 BS. Car came with factory 18’s. Got the factory option 19’s for the year and said “Oh, yeah, that completes this ride nicely.”

Can’t really tell until you try. Specific wheel/tire suspension combos will influence the dynamics.

Can always swap ‘em out if you dislike them.

Good luck!

Just a comment, but the tires make a big difference... I had Michelin Pilot Super Sports... and they were crap... loud, hard, and expensive... I bought Firestone Indy 500 ($150 per... v heap)
and they were really nice street tires... Hoosiers for the track... it's all about the tires...

And if anyone want's a set of OEM crab-claw 987 wheels, BTW I have a set for sale.

I actually run 17s during the winter on my 987.2. For those curious, they fit.

I love my 19’s, but I have never driven one with 18’s….for what that’s worth.

Also switched out Michelins for Firestone Indy 500's and they are great!

The Michelins I had came with the car, they had plenty of tread life left but were 6 or 7 years old. I'm sure that makes a difference, but they were slow to heat up and never felt as planted as the firestones do.

Just took my 18” winter Sottozeroes off and put the 19” PS4S back on. Drives more like a Porsche again.

Just one man’s opinion. And, these are factory option wheels for the model and year. Read - they ain’t boat anchor aftermarket wheels. Unsprung weight matters.

Just my 2 cents on this.
