Default Engine cover detail

This is odd. What's the deal with the amateurish foil bit at the center? It looks very un-Porsche and more like highschool Grade 9 shop class.

Looks like sound insulation, I'd guess it is put there for NVH management.

That is sound deadening mat. Essentially butyl and tin foil. Prevents that panel from acting like a snare drum. It's very effective and it doesn't need to cover the whole panel, just part of it to absorb vibrations. Doing the entire panel just adds weight and cost. All manufacturers use such materials in a lot of locations in cars. My '67 VW had similar material inside the door skins. The name brand that has more or less become genericized is Dynamat.

That's OEM based on what I see on mine. I added more though. Not sure it added any sound deadening.

If I pull a panel I usually put a piece or two on. Can't hurt and I don't really care about added weight.

I got good results by applying it to the door cards and door panels. I also put it behind the wheel well liners, which helped with tire noise.

If it’s added a pound, I’d be surprised, but it’s really helped.
