We need a Cayman Clubsport
Now that the GT3/RS have been announced, the new Turbo, and the Panamera also. We need a cheaper alternative to the GT3. Since the Cayman S is one of the best handling Porsches in the current lineup - we need a Clubsport. Porsche can do it quite easily. Use 3.6L from the Carrera, door pull straps from the RS, more aggressive suspension and aerodynamics, lighter weight, option to delete AC/radio. If they do a limited run and price it around $70-$75K it would sell. I don't think it will eat into Carrera sales much. The Cayman model really needs a boost.

i,m thinking it wont happen cuz of the takeover by VW ,some rearranging first meaning layoffs then a look at what is/isnt selling...Vdub aint gonna put more lipstick on a pig...if it aint sellin it gets canned

Porsche won't build it.
If they did it would probably kick some dirt in the 911's face.
That wouldn't be good for 911 sales.
Back in the 944 days Porsche raced it along side the 911, and the 944 was winning. Porsche will never compete against there own bread winner again!

1. Design a brilliant midengine sports car platform that gets rave reviews.
2. Put in an underpowered engine and no LSD so it won't compete with your existing line.
3. It doesn't sell well, because you nerfed it.
4. So discontinue it. (Coming soon!)
5. ????
6. Profit!

If they make a limited run of Cayman clubsports, say around 500 of them, that would not eat much into 911 sales. I think the people buying them will be the ones with the 911's and GT3's already. It would only elevate the Cayman model to 911 owners, and would actually bring in more existing 911 buyers to the Cayman.

Is this more likely now that they just announced the Boxster Spyder? I don't think they can take off as much weight in the Cayman as they can in the Boxster. Since the Cayman is more money than the Boxster, they have to put in the 3.6L from the Carrera or bump up the HP in the 3.4L to 335HP level at least. All the other bits are already available. This could be a poor man's RS.

I would like to see something like that as well, but the description does remind me somewhat of the RS America. Even with a limited run of about 700 performance oriented "lightweights", and a MSRP about $10k less than the regular 964, some dealers sold RSAs below their own cost. In spite of that history, I think a Cayman S club sport or RS might sell a lot better now. Track events are much more popular now, and so is the RS America.

Cayman Cup Car being built by Napleton Porsche
From another forum:
http://www.napletonmotorsports.com/
I dropped by Napleton the other day while I was at Fox Valley Motorcars getting some service done, and inquired about a 996 GT3. They took me back and showed me some Cayman Cup cars they are building for a Cayman race series. They are stripped to about 2500 pounds, 320hp, set up with JRZs, data acquisition and set up for the Cayman Cup Series with HSR. They are also approved for World Challenge, PCA, and a few other outlets apparently. They sell them straight through Napleton for 79k complete (based on a brand new 2009 Cayman S). This is a steal for a turnkey racecar that is 100% fresh with a series that is now backed by Porsche.

Damn! That Cayman Interseries with turn-key race cars is COOL AS HELL!
$80k fully race prepped is a freakin steal
Why does it have to be on the other side of the country from me?
Pixx- Awesome photos! Thanks for the link.
If this was offered anywhere close to me I would be all over it in a second. Thanks for the heads-up and link.

The series is a STEAL for the cost/fun! Airline tickets are CHEAP and Napleton has it set up so you can "Arrive & Drive" for each event. Thanks for the words on the images. I will be covering each event specifically for the Cayman Interseries, so make it happen for yourself. Check the video in another thread!
Crap...
Just what I did not need to know...
hehe
Seriously, thanks for that added info. Ok...off to learn more.
PS- I will likely be seeing either John Grooms and/or John Lewis and/or Andrew Davis at PSDS for the race school in 2 weeks. Will definitely bring this up to discuss with them.
