2009 CaymanS Fuel Pump Failures
#16
I hope this isn't the same problem that has been a huge issue in the turbo BMWs. They have been having High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failures at a very high rate with many owners going through 3 or 4 in 20,000 miles. One wonders if Porsche is using the same supplier.
This seems to be the achilles heel of the direct injection systems which require very high pressure pumps (>3,500psi) to work. BMW has been blaming bad gas but that is clearly not the problem. Is there a way to find out if Porsche is using the same parts as BMW?

(Of course, I don't have DFI either)

Where is the access panel to the fuel pump?

All the German companies seem to use the same suppliers, it's why Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW all had crappy window regulators a few years ago. It's not a BMW fuel pump, just one from the same supplier (Seimens, I think - they switched to Bosch for the fix). Not having DFI is why you've had no problems - the pumps seem to have trouble maintaining the high pressures DFI demands - I think I've heard some sort of rubber gasket goes after a few thousand miles, in part because of the ethanol content in US gas. The pumps were updated for the 335i, so there should be a ready fix for Porsche once the dealer network figures out replacing the pump with the same model won't work...

epbrown: As a 335 owner, I can tell you there is no fix currently available for the HPFP problem.

Just checked the TSBs on Renntech, and while there isn't one that specifically mentions a problem with the fuel pumps, there is one dated Mar, 2009 reminding dealers that the fuel pumps on 987-2s that they're replacing under warranty, need to be returned to Porsche (for inspection) in the manner that they prescribe. Suggests to me that it has been a problem from pretty early on.

I received a letter from BMW telling me that they would warrant my pump for 10 years. Early in the game but it will be interesting to see where this one goes.

Just got a new 2009 Cayman S. Question--I live in the Atlanta area and for the week I've had the car, I used BP/Amoco gas from a station near me. This station's pump guides indicate the fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol. Anyone else in the Atlanta area know of a good gas brand in our area that does NOT contain ethanol?
Thanks.
If my fuel pump is a problem, I'll let you know. I bought off the lot and the car may have been sitting for a while with the attendant issues this may entail.
