Default 2009 CaymanS Fuel Pump Failures

I got my 6spd CaymanS a little over 5 months ago, and I have already had the fuel pump burn out twice. Porsche can't find anything else wrong with the car, and they claim this isn't a widespread issue...something isn't adding up. Has anyone else had their fuel pump die?

The first fuel pump failed at 4k miles, and the 2nd at 8k miles. So I guess every 4k miles I should just plan on having the car at the shop for several weeks. This isn't what I was expecting from a new Porsche.

Speed Addict,

Where are you located? What brand and type of fuel are you using?

How low do you run the fuel tank before filling up?

its not a good thing to run a tank low all the time [picking up dirt and running the pump hot] i think it would hurt pumps for the long life ,not a often as they are failing in his case...imo

This isn't the problem, I never let the tank get lower than a 1/4.

Unhappy uh oh

I hope this isn't the same problem that has been a huge issue in the turbo BMWs. They have been having High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failures at a very high rate with many owners going through 3 or 4 in 20,000 miles. One wonders if Porsche is using the same supplier.
This seems to be the achilles heel of the direct injection systems which require very high pressure pumps (>3,500psi) to work. BMW has been blaming bad gas but that is clearly not the problem. Is there a way to find out if Porsche is using the same parts as BMW?

Speedaddict: there's always redress via the lemon law since you're in CA. Sorry to hear about it though.

FWIW, my wife has a BMW335i and the fuel pump just died at 3900 miles. If I have to deal with multiple failures, I'll send the car back to BMW. Repeat failures are simply unacceptable from ANY new car.

Jay240: the good news is that it sounds like your dealer has this part in stock. I had to wait close to 2 weeks each time my car went in for the fuel pump since this part was out of stock and had to come in from Germany.

ford_jj: have you taken your car to the dealer? How many miles are on your car?
