Default ditch my 964 for a cayman?

I love the styling of the cayman. It has got to be the most gorgeous porsche ever produced. Am I wrong? That being said, am I crazy to sell my 964 which is a hand-built, air-cooled classic, to buy a cayman? Sure the cayman looks great now, but is it going to hold its appeal in 20 years like my 964 does currently? And further, does a Cayman have the power of the 964?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but a Cayman S should be as fast or faster then a 964.

A vote for dumping the 964. I doubt you will regret it.

The Cayman is a eaiser platform for many people to drive fast or at its limits... while your 964 takes more skill to drive near or at the limit. As for vaule the 964 will always hold its place in the market. The Cayman not as much.

I own both and like both for different reasons, but if push came to shove, the Cayman S would be gone.

I just did exactly that, sold my 964 and bought a Cayman S, big repairs where nearing in my beloved 964 so I decided to sell it and try a Cayman, no regrets so far, cornering is very easy with The Cayman,...

I don't think that the Cayman looks as good (or even close) as a 964. I had the opportunity to do a few parade laps in a 2012 Cayman R and thought that the car was great, but I would not trade my 964 for one.

It really depends what you're looking for. In terms of a daily driver, the Cayman wins hands down from a comfort and safety perspective. If you're looking for a sporty weekend car with occasional track use, I'd pick the 964. It will probably be less reliable and more expensive to maintain. If you're looking for a very track oriented car, the Cayman is a great platform to drive very fast. You'll be much more relaxed at higher speeds and it will be faster, however the band at the limit gets very narrow. The Cayman S will have more power than your 964 but your "butt dyno" will tell you otherwise.

Keep in mind that the 964 will likely hold it's value better than the Cayman.

With respect to "looks", I could just not get comfortable with the shape of the Boxster but felt that the shape of the Cayman has beautiful classic lines. Just my $0.02 from someone who recently moved from a 964 to a Cayman S.

I think the Cayman is the nicest looking car Porsche ever made behind only the Pearl Luminese White 1994 Turbo Carrera, had to be five or six of these made . If I had a daily Porsche car no doubt it would be a Cayman S.

But every time I have the new vs old discussion with myself, the old seems to win. Well almost anyway - we are ordering a 2013 Cayenne for Mrs. TexasRider.

One day I will ditch the 951, and a 911, and get a Cayman. I will. I think. I hope . Maybe .

I owned a 964 (1992 C2) for 5+ years and now own a Cayman S. I can basically reiterate the opinions above: it depends on what you want. The Cayman is a much better daily driver, handles better IMO, and is easier to drive at the limit. That being said, I looooove the sound of an air cooled engine, and the 964 just felt more raw in every respect, from the steering feel to even from the click of opening the door handle. Plus, while a 964 engine will eventually wear out (as all engines do), you don't have to worry as much about sudden engine failure that seems to be an issue for many of the water cooled Porsches. The 964 will hold its value better also.

If I still had both, which one would I keep? Close call but I would keep the Cayman. No wrong choice here.

If I'm not mistaken, only one has the engine in the right place.

I sold my 996 C4S for a Cayman S. No regrets.

The CS is beautiful and a great daily driver. Handling is amazing, very neutral, no understeer. I do miss the acceleration out of corners on my 996 C4S.

I just bought a 06 Cayman S and my last Porsche was a 91' 964 C2. Personally I love the way the Cayman looks. The 964 on the other hand wasn't as good looking to me as the earlier Carrera of 1984 to 1989 imho. This car feels just as fast as my 964 was, but it's hard to tell. The 964 had full headers w/no cat, ported and polished heads, bored thottle bottle, chip...kept up w/600cc crotch rockets to about 150. Overall it was probably just a little quicker on the high end of the rpm range, but i would never be able to keep up on a track with this Cayman. Where the 911 can start to feel light up front and understeer at speeds over 130, the Cayman understeers just slightly and really feels rock solid. Generally it's much easier to drive fast. You'll never have to worry about letting off in corners and swaping ends. And I must say, this water cooled engine sounds amazing even with the stock exhaust. My vote if you have to dump the 964 to get the Cayman, do it. If the 964 is paid for and you can afford to keep it then do, but get a Cayman too, you'll love it.

I own both today and to echo some of the other sentiments, if you need a daily driver then it must be the Cayman but if it’s a weekend fun car I would keep the 964 without question. I love my Cayman S; it’s effortless to drive, it handles well and it has plenty of power. When you drive the 964 you need to be in the moment, it’s a driver’s car – it’s a challenge at times and it’s awesome... The 964 turns more heads as well.

It’s a personal choice but if one “had to go”, for me it would be the Cayman S.
