Default Cayman S Virgin

Hello Cayman S Owners,

I figured I go straight to the source, and ask owners their opinions. I want to know what years to avoid, what are common issues? I know every performance car has its growing pains particularly the first couple years of a Generation.

I am coming from an e46 m3, which I love and plan to keep but want to add a cayman s to the stable. I daily drive my M3 through chicago winters and POUND on it on the track. I have 125,000 miles on the bmw, and it has treated me very well, since I take care of it.

I have never owned a porsche, and do not know what to expect. What can
I learn from you guys about the Cayman? What years to avoid, what are some issues, and are there any inherent engine problems?

Best,

George

Did this about a year ago. Go over to Planet 9 for Cayman advice etc. Sort of comes down to $ vs risk vs usage. Just so don't start too far behind: all Caymans are M97 and not M96, which is better but the '09 and later are A1 new style engines with no intermediate shaft design. Also the 09 and later S is direct injection. '09 and later also have PDK option.
Excellence last month had a cover story titled HALF PRICE HEROES comparing '06 911 and '06 Cayman S. Both can now be had for half the price of new in very good shape and low miles. Lots of info out there, lots of opinions. May the journey begin....

A month ago I bought a 2007 Cayman S with 15000 miles and in top condition, I got a very good deal on my 1993 964 C2 with 105000 miles and I went for the Cayman S.
The only must do for me was to buy an extended warranty (which I bought for a year renewable) since I was well aware of the rare but possible M97 engine issues (a close friend of mine had to exchange the engine in a 2008 997 with less than 6000 miles, luckily the car was on the original warranty)
Yes I would have prefered to buy a 2009 or newer Cayman but they were out of my price range.
