Default 987.2 Winter Rims/Tires

Hi, just recently bought an 09 Cayman S! A few more weeks of warmer weather and then I will have to switch to winter tires. Just wondering what people would recommend, OEM vs Replicas vs Other and any specific brands you'd recommend? Am leaning towards 18" as most threads seem to agree that 18" is safer and more practical for winter driving.

I have no real data on rims but 18" are definitely the most common recommendation for winter tires. The side wall is an inch higher, giving a more pliable ride. You loose some cornering ability but gain some comfort. OEM rims will most likely be more expensive but check out the Parks Marketplace here on Rennlist. You may find something there.

Congratulation on your Cayman S. Fantastic car. And welcome to Rennlist. It's a great forum with a lot of information. You need to post pics. It's required.

Just do not get chrome wheels for winter driving.

Why not go with the 17" wheels off the base model? I can't think there would be a fitment problem given the two cars share suspension and brakes. You would get even more sidewall height as well as a skinnier tire for heavy rain and slush. Is tall and skinny not fashionable in Porsche circles?

Not trying to be a rabble rouser, but I'm an ex-Saab kind of guy and tall and skinny Hakkas is what the cool kids did.

Default Tire Diameter ok?

Porsche recommends 235/40/18 and 265/40/18 (also 255/40/18 to use chains) for winter fitment. I know that I need to keep tire diameters relatively close (3-4%) to OEM sizes to avoid ABS issues. I am looking at Nokian R2s, but unfortunately, they are only available in 255/45/18 for the rear (27.04" diameter). Choices for the front are 235/40-45-50/18. I was thinking of using 235/45/18 (26.33" diameter). These compare to my stock 265/35/19 (26.3") and 235/35/19 (25.48").

Will this work?

17" rims will work with 8mm spacers and longer wheel bolts. The factory 10mm kit with wheel bolts will do the trick. 17" rims will not clear the S front calipers.
I learned the hard way. There is enough room for a sheet of paper with the 8 mm spacers, but no problems with snow tires or track tires with 17"rims.
