Cpo is to sell the car, not to fully inform a buyer of all details, paintwork, damages etc....

PPI is only as good as the mechanic doing the PPI. I've seen some expertly done body work which needed a special light at multiple angles to ferret out and that was a body fender man showing it to me. Sorry but I sincerely doubt that a PPI 100% rules out body work, it's not even an insurance policy against finding it later. If you want it perfect you have to be the first one to title it or be buying it from someone with fortitude and detailed records.

100% Agree with this statement. PPI can be done to cars with prior bodywork (within limitations) so best to ask for dealer to bring out their paint meter and show you that no panels have been repainted. This doesn't work on plastic panels like bumpers though.

I don't like to pay $2-3k more for a used car with CPO unless I know I will really need it, meaning that I will be keeping it longer than the original warranty or mileage. It's only worth something on an older car or if you plan on selling it to an individual that can have the CPO transferred to. A dealer will not give you any more in trade for a CPO'd car, at least from my experience.

That 2013 is selling for $53K? Holy smokes. I paid that for my 2014 18 months ago. I guess 718s have really kept up the values of 981s.
They were asking $56,900.00 about a month ago.

Dropped to $55,900 in two weeks and this past Friday to $52,900.

Update:

Drove it today. Big mistake................

Nice in and out, drives wonderful, everything you guys all know.

Anyhow, I offered $50k out the door which puts the car $46k before NJ taxes and all their little charges for documentation and other fluff.

Guy said $50,500, out the door at $54,600.00.

I walked. Car went into service on June 2012, so next month it's 5 years old.

CPO for 2 years or 50k miles starting when I buy it.

Now the torture begins...................buy don't buy.....good problem to have compared to other possible life issues.

Sticker in 2013 with options: $68,225.00

As much as I think 981S cars will retain their value fairly well, I think $54,600 out the door is a lot to pay for a 5 year old 2013 car, even though it has only 7500 miles on it. It's been sitting on their lot for over a month. You walked - let the salesperson come back to you with a counter. Maybe split the difference, ie. offer $48K before taxes/documentation, or ask him to sweeten the deal in some other way. Don't lose it if you really love it, but there are other cars out there, even if you have to have one shipped to you. Good luck and let us know your decision.

Considering the asking for this one at UDrive below was $52,900.00, you're right it is too much money for the one at Paul Miller when you consider the one at Udrive listed for $89k vs $68k for the Paul Miller one.

Don't know what the UDrive 981S you referenced sold for, but getting CPO on a used Porsche is essential, and only a dealer can offer you that.

I would get a PPI on a CPO, if it is > than a few thousand miles & more than a year or two old. I did it on my 2014 981S this year. PPI is the only one that noticed it had snow tires on it *rollseyes*

It wouldn't surprise me if the SA calls you back and accepts your offer. Just be patient.

That's the plan. Plenty of other examples out there.

At $50k out of my pocket, I think I'm happy given the condition of the car, mileage and the 2 year bumper to bumper CPO.

It has LoJack, built in radar and the whole front/mirrors has the protector film.

We shall see how it goes.

Thanks for all the opinions folks!

Always have a PPI done period. Unless you know these cars very well there is always something that can be overlooked. Although even PPI's miss things and having it done at a dealer can be a mistake.

I have a bunch of stories I can tell you about CPO'd cars I purchased from dealers that had undisclosed issues. One was so bad it took 2 years to fight and in this case was clearly fraudulent. The salesman lied through his teeth about the car.

recently a friend just purchased a Lexus from a personal friends dealership and he insisted it was original paint. I looked at and within 10 seconds I could see that the back end was resprayed and not done well. This is a friend selling a car to a friend so if that can happen anything can. Car was sold at a good price and with only 1200 miles and one year old he figured what could be wrong?

The CPO checklist is the most thorough PPI you will ever find - if you haven't you should look it over

If done properly......

The problem is not in the list but in the party performing the CPO and the fact that this party has an interest in having the car pass the test with minimal costs....
