Is PDK a "manual?"
#76
Just goes to show how little some so called enthusiasts know or are aware of - if you select the timing of the gear change with a paddle and the gear box clutch system operates in exactly the same way as a conventional manual it’s a manual period - the fact that it can also do this automatically in street or track optimised form as well is immaterial.
The reality is the manual gear box in contemporary Porsche sports cars is in fact a cut down version of the PDK box - all of the above is factually accurate and correct.

The reason I keep coming back to this thread is because i think the difference between PDK and "manual" is really a mindset

When it comes time to sell my GT3 with MT I'll make sure to call it a PDK to extract the most value out of it.. since they are the same thing to some of you.
I'm also looking forward to the 992 3RS in manual, no wait PDK, no wait urgh ... I'm lost.

Quality, shoot and run for cover.
I thinks its an interesting discussion - the gearbox operates in the same way as a conventional manual, one is paddle - electrohydraulically acctuated the other is pedal hydraulically actuated. Using the stick in the PDK is exacly the same as using a sequential shifter - hence the PDK - "manual" debate is a mindset.

that's like saying a ceiling fan has more in common with a P51 mustang than it does a geisha fan. I am a huge fan of pdk, but a manual it is not, but guess what, a manual is not a pdk either, both have merits.

I agree that PDK is not a manual transmission. But your reason is wrong. Sure, manual transmissions have traditionally had clutch pedals, but that's not what the word manual means. A clutch pedal is not definitive. I mean, it's certainly 99.999999% the common solution, but there are other ways to manually operate the clutch.
Manual means that there is no automated operation. Automatic means that there is.
Our wonderful PDK transmissions have clutches, not torque converters like traditional automatics. In fact their internal mechanical operation is like a traditional manual transmission. But since the word automatic doesn't definitively mean "has a torque converter," but instead definitively means "has automated operation," then the PDK must be classified as an automatic.

I think you guys are looking at a yellow car and trying to figure out if it's red or green. Can we close this thread and agree that PDK is an "automated manual."

This past weekend, at the local PCA HPDE event, one of my students had a manual GT3. He asked me to drive his car to show him what it could do. I would like to say that the manual transmission in his car was the best manual I have ever driven. But, with the blip on downshift, it is somewhat automated. I think no matter what transmission you choose, they are getting more automated with computer intervention to make up for our lack of talent. ;-)
After driving my PDK and his car back to back, I am even more happy to have my automated manual transmission, especially on track.

Same. I was a die-hard third pedal man. I would have NEVER thought I would accept an automatic in anything except my boring old work truck.
I've driven several other "automated manual" variants. All junk.
But then I test drove a PDK on a GT car. Oh. My. God. It's sooooooooooo good.

My real point was they are both excellent transmissions. I have driven manuals for 37 years and I just don't know whey we need a "controversy" about what comes down to personal preference now, rather than the old comparisons of manuals to the lousy auto boxes of previous decades.
