Is PDK a "manual?"
As a spin-off to the GT3 RS "future classic" thread, I am interested to know what my fellow Rennlisters think about this question: Is PDK a "manual?"
I absolutely love the PDK transmission. It is truly brilliant in my 991.1 GTS. It makes for a great daily driver and weekend road tripper. Not to mention it would optimize my performance on a track (if I ever actually went to a track). But my vote would be no. PDK is not a "manual." Yes, you can hit a paddle or the gear shifter (in the 991, not the 992, #nubbin) but the computer is shifting the gears for you and protecting you from mis-shifting and potentially destroying the transmission. In the manual, one is physically shifting gears with your hand and foot. If you do not do it appropriately, many things can go awry, including the dreaded money shift. Looking forward to hearing what other people think.

No. I love my PDK but it is certainly not.
3 pedals is the qualification.

Car enthusiast answering? No, it isn't a manual.
But...
- You manually have to change the gear when in manual mode (which is the only way I drive)
- You roll freely even if you're in gear just like a manual
- There's hill assist just like the manual version of the car
- The manual version allows you to shift without depressing the clutch
So like tgibrit said, "PDK has more in common with a traditional manual gearbox (clutch) than a traditional automatic (torque converter)."

Shamoo - The manual does not allow you to shift without depressing the clutch. Perhaps you meant without depressing the throttle (no lift shift)?
Saying PDK is "closer" to a manual transmission than to an automatic transmission, while it brings up valid points, it still don't make PDK a true manual transmission. I suppose it depends on what your definition of "manual" is. I see why some would say a PDK is a "manual" because you can manually shift gears (by way of a computer, not by actually manually shifting the gears yourself). But manual interaction does not a manual transmission make (to me anyway). This discussion reminds me somewhat of President Clinton's proclamation: "It depends on what your definition of 'is' is."

The PDK is not a manual because no 3rd pedal. But it does have some characteristics of a manual. For example, when you are at a stop light it goes into neutral. When you give it throttle from a stop you can feel the clutch being feathered in. Those are manual traits. I would say the PDK internally is somewhere between a traditional auto and manual, but the driving experience is 90% auto. Amazing transmission.
