A case for pro coaching or tightening the nut behind the wheel
I had hit a plateau driving the RS at Sebring. The car is set up well, totally stock except for Ferodo pads on Dunlop Max race 2 tires. I hit my best time in March of this year, I was pushing as hard as I thought I could and not making improvements. I posted a video and a friend who is also professional coach, newly retired from PECATL commented “I can find you a few seconds.” Ok challenge accepted. The question remained can I learn? I instruct and I thought I was at the limit of my skill. Yesterday at Sebring we started our first session and he was telling me all things I tell my students and I was thinking, hey I could have done this! But the fine tuning turn by turn made a huge difference in my approach to the course. So under perfect conditions he helped me drop 2.64 seconds from my time! I was astounded. The best mod I ever purchased!

I was at Sebring this weekend as well. Best time was 2:19:05 on MPSC2’s. I felt like I brought a knife to a gun fight. Every GT3 and RS in our tent had Hoosiers or slicks.
Great lap time! Glad to see you can go that fast with the Dunlop’s.
Do you mind sharing your instructors name?
Again a big congrats on that lap time. That is really bringing it!!

Awesome results. Self improvement is what this sport is all about.
I feel really privileged to be surrounded by a bunch of extremely talented amateur drivers in GT3s at our local tracks. While none of us are extracting everything these cars are capable of, we are constantly learning from each other, pushing each other to the next level, and learning from the local coaches. Our cars are all basically stock. Definitely pays to invest in your driving abilities than in your car's performance. It's naive to think that you can't learn anything from the professionals!

Awesome CD... I just got to Sebring and am instructing and driving Sunday.
If you see a tall guy with a prosthetic leg or silver gt3 991.2 with yellow number 8 giving point byes ... I am really good at point bye's... please wave!
I haven't tracked since February and it rained so i really do t know my GT3 real well. Plus i am on old mosc2 with lots of street miles.
I drove through the pits this evening and seems like a lot of cup cars and every gt3 and ra all set up and in slicks!!! yikes!!

Very nice!
My best in the 991.2 GT3 RS is 2:18.2 with Dunlops back in March when temps were cooler than the more recent times there this summer.
I need to find 2 seconds as well.
I'll be back there on Dec 14/15 with Chin so we'll see what that cooler air and the new HRE wheels with relatively fresh Dunlops do.
And what's up with all those slicks?! Thought we were on restriction.

Thanks everyone. No one was more surprised than me. My coach is Geoff Loudermilk. He was chief instructor and Head of Operations at PECATL. He still works for Porsche and is also a great guy. Geoff recently moved back to Melbourne so he is local, when not traveling and driving for PCNA.
Geoff zeroed in on my biggest problem of overbraking then applying throttle before the apex. Simple momentum conservation. I was not trail braking enough and not being as smooth as the car wants. My line was fine but my execution needed fine tuning. We spent the day improving braking, entry and exit speeds for each corner. I did over shoot a few as I started to carry more speed from the last corner. I overheated the Dunlops a few times and the rear stepped out a time or two which was also good to experience but I apologize to anyone I might have scared behind me. He was dead on with what the car can do. All stuff I knew and teach but at a different skill level. When it all came together at the end of the day, my fastest laps felt more relaxed and I wasn’t working as hard but damn my hips hurt from pressing against the seat.
After Geoff left, I spent a bit of time videoing a friend in his new to him 997.2 cup, giving point byes to all those guys on slicks and then after a few laps, Craig gave me the point bye and I tried reeling them back in. I was amazed how many people were on slicks this weekend. That is a quick way around but this car is quick enough for me as it sits.

Glad you posted this thread. I am also a seasoned instructor & am along the same line of thinking. I’ve thought about the idea of a coach & this seals the deal. Cheers

OP, that's awesome! And it FEELS awesome when it happens. I took about the same amount of time of my PB at Road America this past fall in a session and got out of the car after feeling stunned, like WTH just happened? Did the lap timer have a hiccup? Then there's the predictive lap time that you look it and it sort of taunts you like, hey, you can do better. And for those of us that are into this kinda stuff, it's the chase and I love it.
Well done OP, well done.

Thank you and you bring up a good point. The virtual best time is 2:11.29! Lol, maybe for Kevin Estre! That number drove home how I inconsistent I still am even when it felt so good. Geoff says I needed to be smoother and not heat up the brakes or fight the car and I always considered myself a smooth driver. I am realizing the current cornering limits are in my head not the car. He also suggested going to PECATL and only use the low friction surface and wet skid pad. I may do that during the holidays as a father son trip.
