Replacement 991.1 Engine Question
Guys,
I have 700+ miles on a replacement 991.1 engine that lets out a little, appears to be more black than gray smoke when starting off in low gear. It doesn't happen every time, but is pretty consistent.
While in PDK mode, it never happens. It also never happens on startup. Original motor would occasionally smoke on startup, but never while driving in regular or PDK mode.
I would assume this is excessive fuel and not oil related, but would like to hear opinions from the experts on whether I should be concerned or not.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Yeah, I've read a ton of posts regarding this issue, but didn't think a new "refurbished" motor would exhibit this behavior after 700+ miles.
Doesn't appear to be consuming oil, so hoping its just running rich at low RPMs, higher RPMs (PDK) no issue.

So just to clarify...I'm not seeing smoke on startup, only while driving at low RPMs when accelerating from red light, stop sign, etc.
PDK mode or higher RPM, no issue. Assume it will be fine, but just wanted to check since it only has 700+ miles.
Thanks for the quick responses!

Can you measure air to fuel ratio? Might be running a bit rich.

Yep...that's what I'm thinking as well....lot of soot in the tail pipe.
I don't have equipment to measure, but maybe a good question for dealership.
Can't wait for first track day to clean it out!

Dark smoke out of the tail pipe with soot buildup is typically a rich situation from the motor. I would start with a dyno run where they measure air/fuel with a wideband O2 sensor. See if the motor is running rich not sure what the fix will be without a tune but worth asking the dealer.

Yep, sounds like the general consensus is to have the dealership take a look if possible.
Kinda hoping I was done with going over there for a while after the motor replacement...but better to be safe than sorry.
Its definitely not the white/grey puff of smoke I used to see with previous motor.
Does anyone know if dealership can tune or modify ECU settings to correct?

Wonder if the Mass Airflow sensor might be out of calibration.

Contacted dealership today, they are not concerned...stated this is normal...part of new engine break-in?!?
They also said if something was 'out of spec' a sensor would pick it up and the check engine light would come on.
Anyway, thanks for everyone's input, I'll keep an eye on it....at least its under warranty until 2024!
Now on to more important things....like planning my next track day!

I have a late 2014 that got the motor replaced before delivery in 2014 but not a "G" motor. It smokes up maybe 1 in 5-6 starts. Here's a video. Anyone else with similar issues?
