He says he links them to memories as well, which is understandable completely to me haha. And the 991.1 Gts/club coupe/50th anniversary for a road 911 is fantastic, especially at the price points, so I get it!! The 911 gt3 and touring is an interesting spread but hey.
Speedster felt so refined in Sardinia that, at one point, I wondered if it wasn't what a 991.3 Carrera GTS Cabriolet might feel like if a) the Carrera line hadn't gone to turbocharging, b) Porsche would let a "mere" GTS rev to 9000 (unlikely…), and c) Weissach absolutely nailed the chassis. In other words, I was shocked by the Speedster's level of refinement—which is no veneer in the way it sometimes is with performance variants (applies to all manufacturers). It really caught me out…throughout the day.
The 911R did not leave me with that impression—it felt old and less refined, but in a good way. So there's one contrast, even as much as I view the Speedster being a roofless 911R as the right comparison in a number of ways. Suspect the ITBs and lessons learned in the chassis department are two big parts of this dichotomy.

Thanks for the context, and I’ve only driven my Speedster 80 miles and it’s a very smooth engaging ride. Coming out of the RS you’re waiting for all the noise/stiffness, but once you understand it’s not set up that way you understand the character of the car. My wife and I will take a 200 mile drive to see some friends in the GA mountains on the Carolina boarder if the weather holds, and my view of the speedster the top should never be up. Hope to dive an R as I’ve been looking with no luck ........my friend I’m going to see own’d every 911 variety in Porsche history/says he will never part with his R ....I’ve tried to get it. The Speedster is my R, and that gear box is magic and I was one that said I would never buy that car until I rode in it one changed my mind. Be safe and have a driving weekend all.

Thought I would provide a few of my thoughts on how these two cars compare now that my speedster has gotten through break-in period.
the cars:
911R is GT Silver/GreenStripes/matte black wheels/Tarpan Brown interior. 5600 miles on the clock when I went on drive
Speedster is Porsche Racing Green/Heritage leather interior/Aluminum wheels. 1145 miles on clock when I went on drive
... If I could only have one car, given its multi personalities this could be it...but luckily I can keep both with the Speedster soon going down to Madison Club in the desert and the R staying at Drivers Club and where the only constraint is finding time to drive. I am working on one more addition to my personal “ dream garage of long term drivers” which will be mid engine, NA, drop top and not a manual. ...

the 458 Aperta arrives on Monday. During my search process I came across a Rosso Scuderia 16M that I felt I would regret not acquiring. So I now have four long term drivers cars....all very different. The 16M arrived yesterday. Will get some better pics of all of them next weekend when smoke clears
