Default Easy solution to eliminate smoke on start-up!

After having read all the reasons these engines have an occasional initial puff of smoke at start-up, I went searching for various ways to eliminate this issue.

Without going through the various tests and solutions I've tried and experienced I believe I've come up with an easy 99% solution.

Working under the theory that due to the design of this engine some oil accumulates in the cylinder and that burns off when it is restarted, I tried cranking the engine but not letting it start and then repeated that process 3 to 4 times. To my pleasant surprise, it didn't smoke. I've been doing this for the past couple of months and it never smoked again.

Give it a try guys and please report back. If this method works, then the logical solution is to configure a timed fuel pump shut-off for a few seconds.

Guys...

Putting my Mobil 1 hat back on as a former industrial engineer. DO NOT DO WHAT THIS THREAD SUGGESTS.

Much of your typical engine wear occurs during cranking and cold start conditions. The oil pump is not fully pressurized and oil is not yet warmed to flow properly. You are basically dependent on a thin film of residual oil to protect your car at startup and for the second or two before the system comes up to full pressure. Any extra oil in cylinder that burns off as smoke is just extra lubrication for otherwise dry metal to metal contact that can occur at start up.

Your dry cranking procedure is a bad idea, sorry.

Start the car normally and drive off within a minute or so and all will be well.

But the question becomes if it doesn't hurt anything why bother?

Thank you, could you explain how you crank and not start?

Because our ignition is mainly an electronic gimmick (at least in the 3RS).

The second you turn it to crank, it will start by itself for all intensive purposes. The crank is not a manual process.

Or you mean when it's cranking, shut it down before the engine actually starts?

I crank it and just before it tries to start I shut it off. Repeat the process 3 to 4 times.

Personally I like the smoke. Feels unique. My 992 gt3 smoked upon start up after sitting for 3 weeks. Still happens on the new cars

Mine used to smoke on startup frequently but since getting my new engine (g6) in January it has not done it once.

It's not a 911 if you don't smell burning oil occasionally!

That can’t be good for the starter.

Or you could just drive the car harder. They tend to smoke when you don't exercise 'em.

@FourT6and2, assuming your name is a reference to Tool's Forty Six & 2 I dig it.

Just keep the oil level a little below the 1/2 full mark and bingo. No more smoke.

No smoke here.....but all my A/C cars would do it. The 930 was really good at it.
