Default Would you get a Porsche Financial Services Platinum warranty for your GT3?

My 2018 991.2 GT3 Touring CPO ends in a few days. I have an option for a Porsche Financial Service "Platinum" extended warranty for $4800 for 3 years ($200 deductible). I can also buy this for 4,5, 6, 7 years for $6500, $7042, ...)

Would you do it? Or would you set that money aside for repairs and hope not to have to use it. I put about 3000 miles a year on the car, it currently has 13k miles.

Note that while I currently have no plans to sell the car, the warranty would transfer to the next owner. This is in the US.

I would absolutely do it. Small investment for the added protection and peace of mind. And, at least to my knowledge, the policies are cheaper when the car is still covered. And in some instances, only available while the car is still covered.

Is this the third party warranty that is branded as Porsche Platinum? If so, which company is underwriting the warranty?

Personally, I would just set the money aside. These cars are bullet proof.

It's branded Porsche Platinum yes. I am sure it's underwritten by someone else.

Make sure you look carefully at the exclusions. I read through the contract carefully and there were quite a few exclusions. I'm sure it varies depending on which company is underwriting the policy as well. Dealership said that the Porsche Platinum warranty was "as good as CPO", but I am not sure if that's really the case given all of the exclusions and the fact that you need to get approval from the third party warranty before anything is paid out.

For example, engine coverage is limited to only "lubricated parts contained within the engine block". So if you get an oil leak from one of the oil lines external to the engine, or have the relatively common oil leak from the crankshaft oil feed line, that would not be covered. There was also an exclusion for "all friction materials" which to me would exclude PDK clutches.

The only third party warranty I've heard a lot of consistently positive things about is the Fidelity Platinum warranty. Unfortunately, they exclude GT3s by VIN...

I'd also be interested to hear if anyone has had first-hand experience with the third party Porsche Platinum warranty. Is it actually as hassle-free as CPO?

Except for the occasional $11k oil leak.

I know apples and oranges, but my example anyway. I purchased an EasyCare warranty on my 997 turbo for ~$4,500/4-years right before the original coverage expired. Bought from my local Porsche dealer. I was never worried that the engine would go. Rather, I had experienced issues while still under warranty - both front radiators leaking and a rear $20 coolant line that required engine out service. Also had a window mechanism issue, and rear latch issue (all covered under the original warranty). Sure, I could afford to pay for any of these repairs. However, it's the nuance of how these get worked on and the associated price. Can't take my kids to Disney for $4,500 but can protect a $120k 911 turbo (4-years). It was a no brainer for me. In the end I got about half the value back. Nothing went wrong with the car, but the TPMS sensors did need replacement. To my amusement it was covered, and I think back then the invoice for the four sensors was ~$1,800. Anyhow, I know it's a different era and newer car, but still worth it (IMHO).

I'm on the fence with it as well. Understanding that warranties are always a gamble that are designed for you to lose. I do wish there were options to scale back miles to annual increments that aren't 12k as I doubt I'll sniff anything in excess of 3-4k a year. Like yours, I got a significant price jump once you go from 36 to 48mo and beyond.

I just did the 48 month as a piece of mind on my 991.2 It’s still under CPO until next February but I did have some weeping at the crank feed oil line and that repair was $3k so…. You never know what can happen. Can sleep better now knowing I am covered for awhile. Just a piece of mind.

It's worth it to me. I recently did the same for mine. For me, it just gives me piece of mind keeping it under warranty. I feel like if something goes wrong, it could quickly make the warranty pay for itself. That said, I believe warranties are more likely to make the issuing company generate money rather than lose it by paying for repairs. Regardless, I'd rather spend a bit of money now and risk losing that than save that same amount and be hit with a huge repair bill later.

sorry not a mechanic but what’s the signs of weeping at the crank feed oil line. Is it that oil that shows up on the rear diffuser when taken off?

I had leaky cv boots which were covered by cpo - 6k plus. Now my rear deck lid release button isn’t working.

During my PPI there was oil dripping from the Crank Feed Oil line. Visibly. Apparently a common issue. $3k repair. Fully covered.

Ditto! My CPO expires July of this year and 10 year engine warranty runs out Nov this year. Already spoke to Porsche about the warranty. Roughly 5k for several years peace of mind is a no brainer. Bullet proof or not, things happen and very little on our cars is going to cost less than a few grand to repair or replace. Transferable is nice too, just in case...
