cracked front discs - opinions please
Just put my GT3 in for a post track inspection service. 11,000 km on the clock. around 9,000 road kms and 2,000 track kms. My dealer tells me the front discs need replacing at a cost of $4,000. They sent me these photos. Interested to hear from others who have had to replace their front discs whether they think this is reasonable or not looking at these photos. It's the first time I have been confronted with this so wouldn't know one cracked disc from another.

You could get another day on track out of them. For the road they'll be fine for quite a while still. But you will have to replace them soon'ish anyways, so better safe than sorry. It's always better to change before they are completely gone and possibly have a failure.

Those do not look bad to me. Here are mine with about 1250 track mi including half at COTA which is a very hard braking track. The criteria I have often heard is cracks should not connect between holes and should not extend to the edge of the rotor. Can't recall where I saw it but recently read that the Porsche shop manual states cracks should not be more than 5mm in length. My rotors pictured have some cracks longer than 5mm. I may go ahead and replace them before driving COTA again. For a track with less heavy braking I might run mine some more.

Chris I would look into Giro Disc or AP. At the track in Vegas where you can rent a GT3 they have over 3800 track miles on a set of Giro Disc and the disc are still fine. I know orthojoe has been using AP and maybe he will chime in on the condition of his rotors with a wear report. Certain pads like PF 08 and 011 are really tough on rotors.

I've already replaced my front rotors. I've been told they need replacement when either (a) a crack connects two separate cooling holes; or (b) a crack reaches all the way to the edge of the disc. As others have mentioned, my next step is going to be aftermarket discs - probably Brembos.
My car is at about 15K miles presently, with probably 12-15 track days and at least 15 days of AX.

Update - I now read the original post more closely and the dealer wants $4k for just the front rotors. This is definitely too much (and probably unnecessary at this time). Front rotors are $1,500 per my link above and the change shouldn't take much more than an hour.

I would still track on those rotors. The cracks aren't wide and they don't extend to the edge of the rotor.
I'm a big fan of the AP rotors. Initial cost is similar to oem, but the replacement rings will be substantially cheaper. The rotors are also very robust and last a long time.

Those discs look perfectly fine to me - infact they look better than the ones on my car which have seen only 1500 track kms (8 days) and were replaced new in January. I would expect to get another 4 days out of mine so I think you should do at least that well out of yours. Im going to try the brembo type III when all four rotors need changing next time (Id like to try the AP but we have a Brembo dealer in NZ and they are easier to acquire and get replacement rings for - I understand the quality and durability is similar). Id expect roughly twice the life with the slotted type III rotors, so with my new RT RE10 pads I hope to get by for two years without changing pads/tyres vs the expensive annual change currently (infact factory pads are giving me only 6 days at the front due partly to tapering and 15-17 at the rear).

Agreed with above, and also, that price is silly. It's maybe an hour of labor and $1900 for the rotors and pads. Perhaps they were quoting you for all 4 rotors?

Raced with drilled rotors for many years, replace when the crack propagates to the edge (as per Dave 86 930 FI's pic). If you replace at first sign of cracking, you will be unnecessarily throwing $ out the window. Your pics are not even close to needing replacing based on cracks (maybe thickness, but you can't tell that in a picture).

As above. Steel rotors usable unless the cracks from different holes show sign of adjoining, or are about to reach the outer edge of the rotors
I wonder if the quoted price is for all four corners plus a set of pads.
The OEM front rotor is expensive at around $600. Rears are cheaper at $400 ish apiece. Pads are about $800 F+R hence your $4k number...

Thank-you all for your feedback. Your comments and photos have been quite informative. I think I will stick with the current discs for another couple of sessions while I investigate possible alternative options. So thanks again.
