Buy a 991.1 or 991.2 ?
Some purchase advice please. I just began a search for a 991.1 TT or TTS. The wife says get anything as long as its a PDK and a cab.... so I guess I get to choose color.
This morning a well respected collector told me he heard "go for a .2 over a .1". However he couldn't remember who or why he was told this. Any input from you guys?
The Feb.'24 issue of Excellence doesn't really mention anything, The PCA Tech Tactics implied the 991.1 is the most reliable 911 ever made.
So, are there any defects or reliability issues that you know of which would make you choose the .2 over the .1?
My thoughts are:
What I love about 991.1

- 20-40k miles is the sweet spot?
- naturally aspirated engine. Flater linear torque curve
- reliability
- $20-30k over 991.1
- infotainment better. Includes car play
- better low end torque
- better PSAM
- easy to 'tune up' punch

If youre talking .1 vs .2 Turbos, they're all turbocharged - but the points I'd also add are that the .2 has a nicer front end (in my opinion), nicer looking and more modern interior, and all wheel steering. The .2 TS has almost all the tech you'd find on the current 992 Turbo, too, so it's still a relatively up to date car. If you end up going that route, send me a PM as I may be selling my .2 TTS shortly 😄

I would recommend the .2 "S", due to the various upgrades over the .1 and the .2 non S. Especially, if you plan to upgrade/modify it at all.
991.2 S has larger turbos and improved fueling when compaered to the others.

- Better PCM
- More aggressive taillight design
- cleaner integrated front turn light design versus the "eyelashes" - the 991 description/successor to the 996 scrambled egg look - won't age well versus point 2 ageless look.....
- wheel spokes changed to be more flowing design
- more hp and torque
- more functional and better looking steering wheel - 918 style
- improved fuel delivery

You posted this in the turbo forum but standard rules apply here so all else being equal, buy the newest you can afford.
Between a .1 and .2 TTS cab right now that mean paying maybe about $20-30k more for the .2 so what are you getting for that?
Biggest advantages you'll notice are:
- the .2's are newer so generally lower mileage examples will be available
- infotainment screen is newer and looks more modern (you can mimic it with a $600 addon but it's not quite the same)
- a little more power from the factory and a higher potential upgrade path (although you're sort of prepaying for this capability so it depends on what you want to do with the car)
- looks are subjective, I personally prefer the .1 front and 992 rear lights but it's pretty minor stuff as none of them are objectively ugly
- the .2 steering wheel maybe looks more modern? This is about $1500 if you want to replace it.
Good luck in your search! Sounds like you know what you want and just need to track the right one down.

Thank you everyone! I am fortunate, or not, that I like the appearance of both. I agree the .2 PCM is nicer. The larger turbos are better, but the reality is my local tuner can add 130hp/122ftlb to a .1 TTS for ~$3k.
I am not hearing any reasons to avoid the .1 mechanically, e.g. coolant pipes, bore scoring, IMS of earlier generations.
It seems I'll keep the search open to both generations, focusing more on miles, history, ect. versus .1 or .2.

I did the same research and could find no reason to avoid the .1 in favor of the .2 for mechanical or reliability reasons.
For $400, you can add a Mr.12Volt kit to your PCM 3.1 in a 991.1 and have CarPlay, which works seamlessly with, and retains all the OEM PCM functions. The streaming music, nav apps, and ability to use voice commands using Siri and CarPlay are far superior to any generation of PCM, including the 992.1.

I went for the .2 because I knew I wanted to mod it and wanted the better ecm, turbos and fuel system. For me that was worth the extra. If you are happy with stock or <600hp, do whatever you want and find the nicest car with best options for you.

Unfortunately still a premium for both cars. I would normally go with the adage of buy the newest model you can afford but these are Porsches in transition years.
For the non TT or TTS versions the 991.1 is the last of the NA cars from Porsche and they are great cars to own and drive before moving to the 3.0 all turbo line up. I had a .1 4S in Guards Red that I still miss. .2is a good car and quicker just part of the new DNA. I’m not much impressed by car play since I listen mostly to my car while driving.
As far as the TT and TTS versions I can speak for the .1 since I have had one almost 10 years. The .1 TTS does have all wheel steering and ceramic brakes standard as I saw a note above saying it was only available on the .2. Is it modable, yes I am Stage 2 with exhaust and suspension mods and over 600 hp. Very little on the street can give it a real challenge and I’m not a king of the hill guy but these cars put power to the street so well. No doubt the .2 has larger turbos and other up grades that might allow you to go much higher in the hp range for tuning but that comes at a price too. As far as looks I love the look of the .1 as it is very clean and classic in its lines again just my opinion. As far as the interior I think the 991 was a big jump up from the 997 so I did not see much gain going to the .2.
My car has been flawless for 10 years and I keep looking for a real reason to change but keep staying where I am. The 992 TTS is a new standard but for me dropping $2.5-$300k on a car isn’t in the cards, it’s Caribbean and euro vacations instead. . Just my thoughts, no bad choices.

Good day. I was in the same pot as you about 4 years ago. I definitely wanted a Cab S and was not sure on transmission. I bought a 2017 with 11,700 miles CPO and am still so happy with it! We have 30,000 on it; when first got it took a trip to Virginia and Maryland. The top down is fantastic and simply smile everytime i take it for a drive. The water pump did go and was replaced under warranty…seamless..outside of that been an absolute delight.
would highly encourage the 991.2
enjoy the adventure!!

I generally agree with the comments above. The typical advice that I’ve heard for years is to buy the newest 911 that you can afford and I think this is generally good advice. That said, in the 991 generation the turbo and turbo s are fantastic cars in .1 form. There are a few interior tweaks in the .2 that are nice, as well as a few engine tweaks like larger turbos in the s cars. Personally, I find the exterior of the .1 cars to be a bit more organic with smoother lines than the .2 cars, but both are excellent. I like the front end of the .1 car better and the tail lights of the .2 better.
If I had to pick between a .1 car that had the color and options that I wanted vs. a .2 car that didn’t have everything that I wanted, then I’d take the .1 car with no regrets. The fun part of your search will be finding the color that you want. If you want black, silver, or grey then you’ll have many choices. If you want a more unusual color, then you may have to search for a while. Going from memory, I believe that black, silver, grey, and white make up about 93% of the 991 cars. Red, yellow, and blue make up about 6% of them. The rest of the colors are less than 1% of total production.
