I'm going to replace those with titanium bolts, anyway.

After some thought I've looked at the old-style fake aluminum OEM vs the Chinese knock-off on Ebay and have come to a conclusion that they are one in the same, the OEM cap was never made in Germany, and that the contracted factory just kept making them to hustle on the side, which is not uncommon for those that have worked with Chinese suppliers.
The one sold on Ebay is the same, the only difference is the box. The box is the same size but it's double-wall on the OEM and cheaper single-wall on the Ebay sold version. And the printing for the instructions does not look as nice. Big deal.
Does the new version say "Made in Germany"?

Oh yes! Even with the fuel door closed, you can tell it looks better.

Three Wheelin'
Bet on parts not having "Made in Germany" imprinted are made in China, and yes, including OEM.
Heck Porsche even build their cars in China for the Chinese market. Making a mere gas cap is not rocket science. As long as the OEM leave enough money on the table, they will get quality parts regardless of where it is made. Likewise I also encountered disappointment on OEM parts that are made in Germany. There is a lot of mind-f@@cking going on here.

Well, I got mine for $50 off eBay, and have had it on for several months. The car is definitely faster as a result, sits lower to the ground, has better fuel efficiency, and the weight change associated with it has really flattened things out nicely in the corners.
More seriously, though, it looks good, and I've had no problems with it. I do not care whether it's a clone or genuine part in this particular instance. I care that I could take the $100 I saved and enjoy a decent bottle of wine.

the tension isn’t the same as original. So I started looking at it really close and the quality isn’t the same compared to a genuine. People that don’t have an eye for detail would never notice. It might even take a microscope or jewelers loupe to tell.
if you’re happy with the counterfeit, no reason to get a genuine part. But don’t shill false information to other members.

I got suckered by the counterfeit as well because of posts like this and the moment I installed it I knew it was fake.

FYI, a factory would never go to these lengths to knock off an already inexpensive plastic gas cap. $150 vs $50. And $50 is still a lot for a "knock off" plastic gas cap!
I understand wanting to justify spending the extra $100 on a plastic gas cap because you think the quality is higher, but don't fool yourself. If you think you need a microscope to see the differences, then clearly they've done a great job copying it (ie; throwing OEM ones into off-label boxes).
