Default 991.2 PCM in a 991.1?

I want to add CarPlay and all the cool things that brings. Was going to add the Joyauto CarPlay kit to my 2016 991. But the 991.2 has built in CarPlay and a much better screen and over all system.
The interior is basically the same, and the unit should just plug in? Or maybe need a custom harness.

It looks like the new PCM is available
991.2 PCM
991-642-963-QX-DML
991-642-966-RX-DML

Both have Nav/HD/Sat the bottom one is with CD/DVD The prices are $1800 and $2300
I realize the CarPlay kit is about 1/3rd the price. A Backup camera would also be added.

Has anyone done this yet? Am I stupid for even thinking about it?

Pic for clicks...

I had a 991.1 and then I added in the carplay to it. Now have a 991.2. I would not really say it is much better than a 991.1 with carplay. To me not worth the trouble to upgrade units. My 2 cents.

I would love to see someone use one of these kits and come up with a killer option to the OEM units.

Very true, and after a while that is why people tend to get the latest model; however, my 911 journey appears to be ending with the .2 since too much tech is getting to be too much for me!

What sucks is most companies don't design upgradable tech in cars so it grows old really fast.

Thanks all, I just spent the better part of a hour reading that thread. I can not believe how much work it is to upgrade the PCM!!
I have done this before with Audi's adding the Euro units, and it took some extra parts, but this is just stupid!

in the end, I'm going to add a CarPlay kit and upgrade the speakers to the factory Burnmister stuff. Much cheaper, and will give me everything that I'm looking for!

Yea, not going to "upgrade" to a 991.2, or the 992. The .2 is just going to cost too much for little gained, and the 992 just isn't for me, it looks more BMW LUX than a Porsche should.

I assume you know about Nick's upgrade to the speakers but if not that seems to be the way to go.

Yes, was going to go aftermarket until I read that thread. I just ordered the tweeters and sub. If that goes well, the rest will follow.

12vNick he makes a tweeter kit and other speakers, it's really expensive, but I'm sure it sounds good.

I just went with all factory Burnmeister speakers, it was under $1000, everything fit perfectly and sound so much better then stock.
Also did sound deading on everything, and I'm sure that also made a big difference.
