Driving home with the take-out dinner, I was speeding up through an on-ramp and heard a pretty decent sized clunk from the right rear, followed by a repetitive-but-random-and-speed-dependent clunking and tapping. It stops when I stop. My first thought is that something broke loose under the car, like an exhaust pipe or something. No dashboard lights and TPMS looks ok, so I slow way down and make my way home, clunking and chattering all the way. At a stop light I rev the engine to see if the sound is engine related or wheel/tire/movement related. No clunk on engine rev.
I get home and look under the car. No hanging parts. Walk around the car and find something sticking out from the rear wheel well toward my right rear tire. See pics below:

It's punctured the mud flap and sticking out to the tire!
What the fork???
What are the odds that it would go through the mudflap like that? Yikes!
