Default Rear Lid Will Not Stay Raised?

I was doing my monthly water level check in my '17 C2 this afternoon and I had gone to get some distilled water. While I was doing that, I heard a "whack!" from the garage which sounded very odd. I went out to find my rear lid had shut on it's own.

I re-raised the lid, and determined that it would only stay up for about 10 seconds, then slowly fell back in place.

Looking at the design, there are two Gas Pressure Springs (Maker: Stabilus, part no. 991-512-551-20) on either side. I am pretty sure these have developed a leak or dischaged, and are responsible for the rear lid not staying up. I checked on Pelican and they retail for $66.25 each.

It is part 3 in this diagram:

There's no adjustment on these gas springs, correct? (I could be missing it if so.) Has anyone had one of these fail previously?

It is not exactly a show stopper, and I'll take it by my dealer soon for an eval (I am still under Warranty till Aug), but I thought I would ask here as well.

I remember reading about this a while back. Let me search for the thread. Here you go.

How often do you add distilled water?

A car I looked at years ago had an engine lid that would not stay up either. You're correct there is no adjustment.

If you're still under warranty, just let the dealer handle. Should be a 10 mins job for them under warranty.

If you want to do it yourself now, you can go with the OEM part (made by Stabilus as you mentioned but without the Porsche logo) and save about half.

https://rapidparts.com/deck-lid-lift...255120-p-54592

Does appear to be out of stock at the moment.

I just went with the Stabilus struts on my 997. Work well.

Thanks for the link, I missed that in my search.

Since June '19, when I bought the car as a CPO, my log shows a total of 425 mL of distilled water added. With the water pump issue, it's something I keep an eye on once a month.

Yes, simple replacement. I think I did it myself in about 2 minutes; they snap right off and back on. They wear out due to heat exposure from the subjacent engine.

Replace rear lid struts... easy and cheap DIY. Frunk struts will eventually go bad as well, only the result (getting hit in the back of the head unexpectedly) is a little more memorable!

My engine compartment struts went bad too. They were replaced when my car was still under CPO. This is a common part that fails.

common on 911’s, the heat from the engine seems to prematurely kill the shocks. I had to replace mine last year.

If you track, they fail even faster. More heat. My 2018 are gone. Haven’t gotten around to replacing them yet.

I replaced the engine deck lid shocks on my 991.1 C2S, and as a DIY it's right up there with the easiest thing to fix on the car. The easiest is replacing the battery in the key fob, but replacing the shocks is not far behind in simplicity. Buy aftermarket struts and save yourself a bundle. The struts cost me about $15 and 10 minutes of time to replace.
