Default Shipping car to Europe for Vacation? (and back)

Hi all,

Wife and I started contemplating shipping our car to Europe for a 3 week drive through Europe in the next few months.

Wondering if anyone here has done this and what kind of timeline and expenses I should prepare for?
Plan is to ship the car to Italy/France or Spain (whichever is quicker) in advance and plan to arrive in Italy/France or Spain before it arrives.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

to be honest with you it would probably be a lot less hassle to just hire a car over here in Europe. All the main hire car companies do high end cars, and there are specialist companies that do real high end cars.

Probably cheaper to do European delivery on a new 992, drive it, bring it here and flip it

It can be done but it's simply not worth it for 3 weeks.
Transit times, sitting in customs in spite of being a temporary import etc etc.
You can pretty much rent anything nowadays, but be prepared to pay .
Companies such as https://lurento.com/

Your standard rental companies also have sports / luxury car offerings.
For instance Sixt in Barcelona has everything from an R8 to a Cayman.

Yeah...that's a crazy idea. Have you actually looked into what is involved, how long it would take and what it would cost.

For a year....maybe this could make some sense....but not for 3 weeks.

Sixt is a good starting point.

Never heard of these guys but they claim to be the biggest in Europe: https://europeluxurycars.com/european-car-rental-agency

Out of curiosity, and knowing the cost of rentals has skyrocketed, I went to the Lurento site and found a few 911's for pickup at Nice, France airport (randomly picked Nice because I like it so much). Looks like the going rate is EUR 900+, over $1000 USD per day. That'll be over $21,000 for the 3 week period. Seems.... errr.. like a lot for a rental car. At least that's well under the cost of a night at a nice 5 star hotel in that area in the summer. Add another $1k per day for a 3 Michelin star dinner for two. After a few weeks of this, you're talking real money. Enjoy.

I believe the program has been canceled permanently.

Contact https://fastlanetravel.com in Florida. They can book you a car, plan your itinerary and set up all the details. I’ve used them several times, the last 2017 when I did a 911 Euro Delivery.

i wish that was possible.

you're essentially asking to import your car into an EU country which mean duties/taxes, licensing, insurance, and potential mod needed to make it compliant.

It used to be possible to do European Delivery and make money on the flip. I did it in 2006 on a 3-series BMW where between cost savings on the car, and the fact that it didn't eat up a dealer allocation, I was able to pay about $5k less than ordering a car to be delivered to the US. That $5k covered a decent chunk of the trip cost as well. The only downside was the 6-8 week wait for the car to come back to the West Coast.

A bunch of folks over at Bimmerfest.com got pretty good with zero-down Euro Delivery leases, and/or getting the car there and then selling it with less than a couple thousand miles on it for break-even or a small profit.

Avis has new Porsche’s you can rent! We have done it twice - just be sure to buy the optional insurance because your VISA and regular comprehensive insurance does not cover things like flat tires, chips in windshields, and nicks in wheels - ask me how I know!!! Had a nearly new 911 4S cab that had a flat tire 2 miles from picking it up (the tire exploded while it was sitting at the curb - someone before me did a cheap patch! That cost me $650 for a new tire and the tow charge!). Review the car and document, with pictures, upon pickup any damage, however small it is!! Avis hires hires an independent company to review the car for damage and they are VERY picky!!! If a small chip on a windshield can catch the tip on a ballpoint pen, you will be charged!!! My friend rented a C4S and was going to be charged for a wheel since it had been curbed. Fortunately, my friend had photos of the wheel upon pickup - one photo saved him the cost of a rim! That is why I say, buy the optional FULL coverage insurance, because the independent review company will find something!!! Having said all that, both time we had a fantastic experience and will definitely do it again! (Make sure you hit all of the Swiss mountain passes - unbelievable!!!)
