New Tire “Damaged” by installer- Opinions please
I brought 4 new rear Michelin tires to the installer. PS4’s. I took it to them because they are able to properly handle CL’s. One of the rear tires had a 3/4” screw in it when I went to pick it up. It was embedded about 1/2 inch into the tread I would guess. It was not between the tread. They pulled it out and tested it for a leak and found none. Based on my mileage these tires will last me 3-4 years. I’m thinking I don’t want to start out with a compromised brand new tire. I tend to think the only thing stopping the mail from going deeper was the belt. Now it will be exposed to water, etc. Am I being too particular? I want to be reasonable. Thanks.

If the nail was in the tire before you drove away from the installer they owe you a new replacement. Did you see the nail in the new tire before you drove away. If so how?

I did not take the car. I agree I could make them give me a new tire. That is where I am leaning. Is the tire compromised in a way that premature failure is more likely at the point of the screw going in? Again, I just do not want to be nitpicking because I can.

I did. Is this a legit claim? It did not puncture the tire. I don't mind going that route to help the shop, but I am not willing to say it happened on the road. I guess I could offer to the shop that I am willing to try to get reimbursed.

Ties do get many wounds during the miles driven with no issues.......... I would not worry about it if it's not leaking.

I don't know what kind of road hazard claim you can file if tire is not leaking, but you can always try. Tires hit a plethora of objects on the road from glass, nails, metal objects, etc. I am sure that many of those objects puncture or damage the tread - but you never notice because there is no leak.

pick your battles, OP. let this one go. any damage done by what you described will not make an appreciable difference in the life of the tire.

How does a new tire that is just mounted and never driven get a screw 1/2" deep into it?

Right? They moved it out of the shop to another area for some other work. I don’t know if it was exactly 1/2 inch. But I think it sunk in to belt depth and stopped there. It was not sunk all the way in.

i wouldn't worry about this at all.
also see no chance of the tire warranty covering this. the tire is holding air and no chunks of rubber are dangling or sheared off.
as others have said, your tires take all kinds of abuse while being used that you never see or know of. it'll be fine. enjoy the new tires.

It was a brand new, unused/undamaged tire when you gave it to the installer. You should expect to receive the same when you pick it up. I would ask the installer to reimburse you the cost of a new tire.

I suppose you could try for a compromise. Get a written statement of what happened, and some promise, also written, that if something goes wrong with that tire, they will replace it.
